Commerce woman to serve probation sentence

Commerce – The misuse of debit cards has landed a local woman on probation. A Commerce woman pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing several debit cards then trying to use them at a local business. She'll now serve two years on probation.

More record-setting sales figures in Hunt County

Greenville – It was just barely a record sales month for the city of Greenville. December sales were up about $950 from December, 2006. A slight increase in the city's sales tax payment for that month also marks another record for Greenville.

Search being conducted for burglary suspect

Hunt County – A Rockwall man is being sought in at least 17 burglaries. Local authorities were prepared to arrest Brian Edward Manning Jr. on outstanding warrants when the suspect fled. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kaufman County Sheriff's office at 972-932-4337.

Local man violates parole, sentenced to jail

Commerce – Three years after making a bomb threat a Commerce man is headed to jail. The man was arrested in April 2005 after making a bomb threat to Commerce High School. He's been accused of several parole violations and was sentenced yesterday to one year in jail.

Commerce Mayor to step down

Commerce – Commerce Mayor Sheryl Zelhart will not be seeking re-election in May. That announcement was made at Tuesday's City Council Meeting. Zelhart thanked council and community members for their support and allowing her the opportunity to serve the city of Commerce. Zelhart has served as the city's Mayor for the past six years.

In addition to the position of Mayor, Council Members 2 and 4 will be placed on the May ballot. Filing for those positions opens Monday and closes March 10. The city's elections will be held May 10.

Not guilty plea entered in local stabbing case

Commerce – A convicted murderer living in Commerce has pleaded not guilty in connection with a stabbing. Arraignment was held yesterday for the man. He's alleged to have stabbed a male victim in Commerce last July. A tentative trial date has been scheduled for March 24.
