Commerce – There's going to be plenty to do in downtown Commerce this weekend. The 20th Annual Bois d'Arc Bash gets underway this Friday night with live entertainment filling the square in Commerce. Always the highlight of the event, the Bois d'Arc Bash parade will hit the streets at 10am Saturday and trophies awarded at 12:15.
Hunt County – The unemployment rate in Hunt County showed a slight rise for August, but stands far lower than this time last year. Over 1,100 jobs have been added in the county over the past year, and the unemployment rate is at one of its lowest points in the last four years. The Hunt County rate was listed at 5.3%, up slightly from 5.2% in July. The statewide unemployment rate rose from 5% to 5.1% in August.
Abilene – The A&M-Commerce Lions could not make the comeback Saturday, as they fall to 1-3 this season after a loss to Abilene Christian 27-18. A punt return for a touchdown helped the Abilene Christian Wildcats jump to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, putting the Lions against the wall early in the game. At the half, the score was 17-5 Abilene Christian.
The A&M-Commerce Lions hit the road tomorrow to face south division rival Abilene Christian. The Lions are coming off an upset win over Midwestern State last week, and hope to notch another victory tomorrow. In last year's meeting, the Lions put it over on Abilene Christian with a 37-17 victory.
Commerce – A world renowned hypnotist will be working his magic on the A&M-Commerce campus tonight. Over 20,000 people worldwide have been hypnotized by Michael C. Anthony, who makes an appearance tonight in the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center. The first 30 audience members will be hypnotized by Anthony, who can put someone under with just the snap of a finger. His performances are described as an avant-garde blend of human psyche and eye-popping theater.
Bonham – Bonham Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found along the side of Highway 121, according to North Texas E-News. The body was found near the city limits, south of Bonham. 55 year old Richard Chism was found by Texas Department of Transportation employees who were doing road work in the area.
Police say there is no evidence of foul play, but the body has been sent to Dallas for autopsy.
Commerce – Commerce residents can now pay traffic tickets or outstanding warrants online. The Commerce City Council voted in regular session last week to allow the Commerce courts to begin accepting credit card payments online. There will be a 3% processing fee for all such transactions.
Commerce – The 21st Annual Merchant's Fair is set for tomorrow on the A&M-Commerce campus. About 40 Commerce merchants are expected to attend the fair that gives A&M-Commerce students and faculty the chance to become familiar with area businesses. Food samples, coupons, and cash prizes are some of the highlights at the event sponsored by both the Commerce Chamber and A&M-Commerce.
The event begins tomorrow at 10am in the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center on the A&M-Commerce campus.
