Tigers lose Game 1

Duncanville – The Commerce Tigers baseball team dropped game 1 of a best-of-three series against Hillsboro last night, losing 6-4. The Tigers tried to mount a late comeback in the 6th inning, when they tied the score at 3-3, but Hillsboro answered back in strong fashion, notching three runs in the 7th to put the game out of reach. Game two of the series is tonight at 7:30 at Duncanville High School, and Game three, if necessary, is tomorrow at 1pm.

The Commerce City Council unanimously approved changes to an ordinance on keeping yards and ditches mowed, returning regulations to requiring property owners to mow to the curb. For the last few years, one only had to go as far as the property line.

What is the future of the Commerce City Library?

Commerce, TX –

The Commerce City Council agreed to place two members on a ten-member fact-finding committee that will explore the long-range plans of a city library. City Manager Bill Shipp and the President of Texas A&M University-Commerce, Dr. Keith McFarland, developed the idea after consulting with the city library board.

Wills Point teen killed

Wills Point – A Wills Point teen was killed last week after his vehicle was struck head-on by a dump truck. 17 year old Justin Lee Dugger was southbound along FM 751 in a '94 Camaro when the collision occurred with Ben Depue of Lone Oak. Officials said the Camaro was driving on the wrong side of the road in a no passing zone, leaving Depue no time to react.

Groundbreaking for PJC

Greenville – Paris Junior College will break ground on its new $13 million facility in Greenville Friday. The new campus will be constructed on 172 acres next to Greenville High School. Once complete, the facility will be able to serve about 2,500 students. 1,200 are taking classes at the current PJC site in Greenville.

The groundbreaking is set for 10am Friday. The new site should be up and running by the fall semester of 2008.

Commerce City Council changes

Commerce, TX –

After Richard Hill and Tony Henry took their seats for their first meeting following Saturday's election, Mayor Sheryl Zelhart presented retired councilwoman Penny Belcher with a framed collection of memorabilia from her 12 years of service. While Belcher left the council, she did agree to serve on the city's board of adjustment.
