Respected Quinlan resident passes away

Quinlan – A longtime resident and namesake for a Quinlan school has died. Arlee E. Butler passed away Wednesday at a nursing home in Terrell at the age of 91. Butler served on the Quinlan ISD School Board for 37 years. The A.E. Butler Intermediate School in Quinlan was named for him.

Services are set for Saturday at 2pm at the Quinlan Methodist Church.

TV show set to film in area

Honey Grove – The TV show One Tree Hill will be filming in Honey Grove next week. The CW Network teen drama will use around 150 local people as extras in the shoot.

Producers of the show invited students from across the nation to submit 30 second videos telling how much they loved their town. Of the more than 100,000 entries, 8 students from Honey Grove won the contest, and the town will be featured in an episode. The students will also have featured roles in the episode, which will be based on the night of a high school prom.

TCEQ answer sewage dump questions...sort of

Lone Oak – The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has filed their response to comments in August regarding a proposed sewage dump near Lone Oak. There's a catch, however- the public may never know what that response is.

More than 100 people showed to a public meeting in August to voice opposition to a proposed sewage dump near Lone Oak. Hunt County commissioner's also made official their objections to the dump. During the meeting, the public was allowed to ask the TCEQ questions to be answered at a later date.

Museum director retires

Greenville – The Executive Director of the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum has announced her retirement. Adrien Witkofsky has been director of the museum since 2000. She became associated with the museum in 1992 as a volunteer and became an administrative assistant in '93. Witkofsky plans to spend more time with her family in retirement.

A search for a new director will begin immediately.

TAMU-Commerce – The Synergy brass ensemble was supposed to perform at Texas A and M University-Commerce Thursday night, but the group couldn't get out of town.

Road worker killed near Paris

Paris, Texas – A road construction worker was struck and killed by tractor trailer rig Monday near Paris. 20 year old Juan Bernardo Ontiveros of Emory was struck by a southbound rig just before noon Monday along Highway 271 just north of Paris. The truck was driven by a 37 year old Brookston man.

Two civilians stopped and gave Ontiveros CPR, and were able to get a pulse before the ambulance arrived, but Ontiveros was later pronounced dead at the Paris Regional Medical Center.

Drug bust on I-30

Commerce – A traffic stop along I-30 just east of Sulphur Springs Saturday ended with state troopers making a sizeable drug bust. A Dallas couple was arrested after troopers found 4 pounds of cocaine, PCP, ecstasy, and marijuana in their Chevy Suburban.

The A&M-Commerce Lions finish up a three-game home stand tonight in the Field house on the A&M-Commerce Campus. It's a double-header against Cameron University, with tip-off for the women at 6 and the men at 8pm.

Commerce Chamber Banquet next week

Commerce – The 98th Annual Commerce Chamber of Commerce Banquet is set for Thursday, February 8th in the Memorial Student Center on the A&M-Commerce campus. Dancing with the Stars is the theme, and several couples will be performing different types of dances for the audience.

Open house at Commerce animal shelter

Commerce – The Commerce Animal Shelter will be holding an open house this Thursday, February 1st. The open house will be held from 3pm to 6pm with the goal of finding homes for some of the animals in the shelter. A recently formed local non-profit organization, Prevent A Litter, Inc, or PAL, will also be giving vouchers out for low-cost vaccinations and spay or neutering.
