Commerce man re-indicted

Commerce – A Commerce man has been indicted a second time for aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault. Charges against 43 year old James Matthew McGuckie were dismissed last month when the victim in the case could not be located, but the Hunt County Grand Jury has re-indicted McGuckie on the same charges.

McGuckie again faces aggravated kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon charges as well as retaliation charges against the victim and her family.

Bonham burglary spree

Bonham – Several businesses were hit by burglars overnight Saturday in Bonham. From midnight to 6am, burglars hit six restaurants and one store. They took a variety of items from the locations, including cigarettes and cash. One of the burglars is described as a white male between 35 and 40 years old, after being caught on video surveillance.

Tigers baseball still kicking

Commerce – The Commerce Tigers advance in the 3A baseball playoffs after defeating Bonham in a three-game series. The Tigers picked up their first area baseball title after coming back from a one game deficit, picking up the next two games to take the series. The Tigers face 10th ranked Van Alstyne in the best-of-three regional quarterfinals that begin Wednesday at 7pm in Allen. Games 3 and 4, if necessary, are scheduled for this Saturday in Allen.

Area election briefs

Hunt County – Some area election results from Saturday:

In Commerce, incumbent Debbie Akin wins convincingly for Place 6 on the Commerce ISD School Board; Medley Wilson defeats Robert Rabb for Place 7, replacing Mitchell Scott who did not file for re-election.

Neither Floyd nor Union Valley passed measures to incorporate the communities to Class C municipalities.

Last day to return books before police are involved

Bonham – Today is the last day to get overdue book back to the Bonham Public Library before you may get a visit from the police. Tomorrow, officials with the Bonham library will begin filing charges against those with long-overdue books or other library materials.

Once official charges are filed, the Bonham Police can begin issuing arrest warrants.

The library has a 24-hour book drop where anyone can return borrowed material.

Bank robber caught

Red River County – Police and FBI nabbed a man last week in connection with the robbery of the Red River Federal Credit Union. 35 year old Jeffrey Todd Merchant was arrested in Bowie County last Tuesday. Merchant was found in a building behind his ex-wife's business. After taking the man into custody, authorities searched the building and recovered the money taken in the bank robbery.

Rockwall Police are looking for a man that robbed a convenience store with what he claimed was an explosive device. The man left the store at Ridge Road and I-30 with a manila envelope full of cash after showing the cashier an object with wires sticking out of his pocket that the man claimed was some sort of bomb.

A&M-Commerce commencement tomorrow

Commerce – A&M-Commerce is set to graduate more than 1,000 students at Commencement ceremonies tomorrow. Four separate ceremonies will be held at the University Auditorium in the Ferguson Social Sciences Building. Chancellor of the A&M System Dr. Robert "Bob" McTeer will be speaking at the two morning ceremonies, while A&M-Commerce alum William L. Crabtree Jr. will speak at the two afternoon ceremonies.

Election day tomorrow

Commerce – It's Election Day tomorrow. In Commerce, there will be no city election, but two spots are up for grabs on the Commerce ISD School Board.

For Place 6, 12 year incumbent Debbie Akin faces challengers Kay Townsend and Chris Vaughan. Robert Rabb and Medley Wilson are both vying for Place 7 on the board. Incumbent Mitchell Scott did not file for re-election.

Voting will be held from 7am to 7pm at the Commerce Middle School.

Check with your local officials for polling places in your area.

Commerce, Celeste lose baseball playoff games

Commerce – Commerce drops there first game of a 3-game baseball playoff series to Bonham, 7-5 last night in McKinney. The Purple Warriors jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings of the game, to set Commerce in comeback mode all evening, which they were not able to achieve. Game two of the series is Saturday at 4pm in McKinney.
