Rains County has a new official flag

Rains County – Rains County has a new, official county flag. County commissioners approved a design earlier this month in regular session. The flag depicts an outline of Rains County and some parts of surrounding areas, along with an eagle and the words Eagle Capital of Texas .

Campbell to receive money for improvements to the water supply

Campbell – The water supply is Campbell will be getting some major improvements soon. The United States Department of Agriculture has approved a $780 thousand grant and a 1-million dollar low interest loan for the Campbell Water Supply Corporation. The money will be used to make several improvements in the Campbell water supply, including drilling a new well and constructing new storage tanks.

A regional drug task force receives nearly $300,000

Texas House approves a bill to make car burglaries a state jail felony

Austin – The Texas House recently approved a bill that will raise car burglaries from a misdemeanor to a state jail felony. A&M-Commerce crime information officer Jason Bone said he's pleased to see the house approve the bill, and says it could have direct impact locally. Bone doesn't see the change having a major impact on actual enforcement of the law, however. The bill is now slated to go before the Texas Senate for consideration.

Crime alert issued by A&M-Commerce Police

Commerce –
The A&M-Commerce Police Department has issued a crime alert after a purse snatching near the library this week. The robbery occurred around 10 pm with the suspect described as a 5 for 8 bald black male. The University Police are urging the public to be extra vigilant while walking at night on campus, staying in well-lit areas and keeping aware of the location of the blue-light emergency phones across campus. Anyone with information on the crime is urged to contact the UPD at 903-886-5873.

Three Terrell men arrested at gunpoint in Wills Point

Wills Point – Three Terrell men were arrested at gunpoint in Wills Point last week after a call to the police said 3 men were running from a house firing a gun. Police responded to the call, and eventually arrested the men at a convenience store in Wills Point, and a 9 millimeter pistol was found in the car. Two other guns believed to be stolen from the house the men were running from were also found after a witness said the men had thrown objects off a bridge.

Motor vehicle registration in Commerce

Commerce – The Motor Vehicle Department offers vehicle registration in Commerce at the Chamber office downtown each Wednesday starting at 9am. The office is closed for lunch from noon to 1, but continues to register vehicles until 4:45pm. The Chamber of Commerce office is located at 1114 Main Street in downtown Commerce.

Traffic light in Commerce to be set to flashing today or tomorrow

Commerce – The traffic light at Highways 24 and 224 in Commerce is scheduled to be set to flashing today or tomorrow. Construction is complete, and TxDOT officials were waiting for final inspections before setting the light to flashing for 7 days of testing. Once the 7 days has passed, the light will be set to normal functions. The traffic light will be evaluated for 30 days to ensure smooth operation.
