Bootleggers busted

Greenville – A major bootlegging operation in Greenville came to a close late last week after a raid by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. The operation on Henderson Street in Greenville reportedly offered walk-up alcohol sales to anyone. TABC officer Benny Brothers said the TABC had received much of their information from minors and that the location had become a major source of alcohol to underage drinkers in Greenville.

Commerce Tigers kick off football season tonight

Commerce – As high school football kicks off tonight all across Texas, the Commerce Tigers are ready for action. After many years as the defensive coordinator for the Tigers, Bill Draughn enters his second year as head coach for the Tigers. The Tigers return many players off last year's squad, and Draughn will be leaning on that experience throughout the season. Seniors hold key positions along the offensive line, running back, throughout the defense, and senior Zach Boles will be lining up under center once again.

Northeast Texas Children's Museum starts fundraising campaign to spur growth

Commerce – The Northeast Texas Children's Museum announced a capital campaign yesterday intended to build reserves and allow growth for the facility. Where Dreams Begin is the name of the campaign publicly announced at a Rotary Club meeting at the Children's Museum yesterday. The museum seeks to raise an entire year's budget, which is about $150,000, to put into reserves. This should allow the facility a greater chance of receiving monies through grants and other programs, according to Children's Museum Board President Wyman Williams.

Lions start season this weekend

Commerce –








The A&M-Commerce Lions hit the road Saturday to kick off season two under head coach Scotty Conley. The Lions have moved into the Lone Star Conference North Division this season and are the only Texas team in the division. A&M-Commerce returns eight starters on offense and six on defense, but has some new faces in some key positions.

Lamar County Commissioners face tough budget decisions

Lamar County – Lamar County commissioners are facing a $1 million shortfall in this year's budget. About $400,000 of that is due to rising health insurance costs. Although revenues for Lamar County are expected to be up, departmental requests for employee pay raises, furniture for the newly remodeled courthouse, and rising fuel costs bring general fund expenditures $1.16 million higher than last year's budget.

Hunt County burn ban extended

Hunt County – A burn ban remains in effect across Hunt County. Dry conditions have led the Hunt County Commissioners Court to once again extend a burn ban for all of Hunt County. Temperatures officially topped 100 degrees yesterday and Hunt County Fire Marshall Dorsey Driggers recommended the ban extension for at least two more weeks before the commissioner's court yesterday.

Final decision on privatizing Hunt County Jail could come in September

Hunt County – Bids to turn the running of Hunt County Jail over to a private company will be in next week. The commissioner's court will review the bids and examine the financial feasibility of turning the jail over to a third party to manage. Pressure has been on the facility since they failed an inspection last July by the Texas Commission of Jail Standards. The commission said the Hunt County jail had too few corrections officers to supervise all of the inmates.
