SURRMA making progress in first year

It's been nearly six months since the Sulphur River Regional Mobility Authority (SURMMA) has been chartered.

Comprised of Hunt, Hopkins, Delta and Lamar Counties, the SURRMA committee, overseen by the Texas Department of Transportation, helps speed up highway and other transportation projects in the region.

No action taken regarding CISD Superintendent

Commerce – The Commerce School District has taken no action to the issues regarding Superintendent Mike Roberts.

That decision was made following a special meeting Monday, where board members were to consider an investigation into the Superintendent's performance of duties, conduct and employment contract with the District.

As of now, Roberts will remain on paid administrative leave. No additional comments were released and no future meeting concerning the Superintendent has been scheduled.

Electric bills are about to go up again in Greenville.

Greenville – Electric bills are about to go up again in Greenville. GEUS, the local electric utility system, has announced it will be raising the fuel adjustment charge it passes on to customers again, starting Tuesday. The charge is blamed on increasing natural gas prices coupled with a higher electric load due to above average temperatures in June. Charges will increase from 5.6 cents/kWh to 7.4 cents.

Lone Oak to hire new Police Chief

Lone Oak – The City of Lone Oak is about to get a new Police Chief. The Lone Oak City Council is scheduled Tuesday during a special session to consider hiring Wade Kern as the new police chief, 12 days after it accepted the resignation of former Police Chief Neil Dent. There were also reports that Mike Roach, the only other paid police officer, had resigned as well. The Council has requested the assistance of the Hunt County Sheriff's Office in dealing with law enforcement during the interim.

Final round of mosquito spraying this week

Commerce – The City of Commerce beginning Monday will be spraying insecticide to help control the mosquito population. Spraying, to take place through Thursday of this week, will begin at 7 p.m. each night. This is the third and final city-wide spray the city will be conducting this summer.

While the product sprayed is of low toxicity to people and pets, direct contact should be avoided. Residents are advised to stay indoors when the spray truck is in your area.

Population numbers prove positive for Commerce, Greenville

Commerce, Greenville – Greenville and Commerce added more citizens during the latest population estimate. Population estimates released Thursday by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) do however reveal that growth came at a slow pace. Nevertheless, between 2006 and 2007, Greenville saw an increase of 250 residents, while Commerce added 50 people. Greenville and Commerce were the only two cities in Hunt County to see an increase in population between 2006 and d 2007.

Commerce ISD to hold Special Meeting concerning Superintendent

Commerce – A Special Meeting has been called for Monday by the Commerce School Board to address issues concerning the District's Superintendent.

Earlier this week, board members placed Mike Roberts on paid administrative leave. Reasoning for the decision was unspecified.

In turn, A.C. Williams Elementary School Principal Julia Robinson has been appointed to act as chief administrator in Robert's absence.

Facilitative projects in Commerce moving forward

Commerce – As construction along Live Oak Street in Commerce continues to make headway, several other city projects are nearing completion as well.

Lone Star Pizza Works is putting the finishing touches on their new facilities at the intersection of Highway 50 south and Culver Street. The new facility will seat 150 customers and will include about 80 parking spaces.

Lone Star's Ralph Moyer says they're about three weeks away from the move. Moyer says the new move will also bring a new name, Lone Star Eatery Grill and Bar.

Current grand jury to meet for final session

Hunt County – The current edition of the Hunt County grand jury is scheduled to meet Friday, to end its six-month term of issuing indictments for consideration by the 196th District Court.

In July, a new grand jury will be empaneled in order to begin investigating cases for potential consideration by the 354th District Court, for a six-month term running through December.
