Hunt County Fair to begin Friday

Hunt County – It's Fair time in Greenville. A flag raising will take place during today's Fair opening ceremonies, which also includes the traditional ribbon cutting. That's scheduled for 4 p.m. at the main entrance to the Fairgrounds on Jack Finney Boulevard across from L-3 Communications. Among the several other activities taking place today are the Junior Livestock Show Queen and Princess Competition and the Lone Star Garden Tractor Pull, both beginning at 6 p.m.

Commerce Animal Shelter seeks your help

Commerce – The Commerce Animal Shelter is seeking your help this summer season. June is typically said to be a slow month for adoptions, due in part to a lower student population. Shelter representative Benny Chambliss says of the Shelter's 44 kennels, about half are currently occupied.

Hunt County jail escapee sentenced to state jail

Greenville – A Hunt County jail escapee has been sentenced to state jail. Tina Ilene McCasland of Greenville had probation on a charge of forgery by utterance revoked Tuesday and was sentenced to 15 months in a state jail. McCasland had forfeited her bond on the charge last week when she failed to appear for a probation revocation hearing. That same day, she reportedly fled from sheriff's officers who were transporting her from District Court to the Hunt County Jail.

Director named to United Way of Hunt County

Hunt County – A director has been found for the United Way of Hunt County. Stacey Blasingame, currently office manager for the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, has been hired to the position. She'll succeed Lana Calvery, who stepped down from the post last month after getting married and moving to Arkansas.

Motorcycle chase suspect still in custody

Hunt County – A motorcycle chase suspect remains in custody Wednesday. Bryan Tredway of Lone Oak was formally charged in Rockwall County Tuesday with evading arrest, for allegedly leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase which ended Monday at Crossroads Mall in Greenville. Tredway, who is on parole for an unspecified previous conviction, was being held Tuesday on $15,000 bond.

Matching grant to aid City of Commerce

Commerce – With the appropriation of and $11,000 match by the city of Commerce, an extra $14,000 has been earned. The $25,000 total is part of an approved Audio/Visual grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

TxDot project to cost the City of Commerce

Commerce – An upcoming state highway project, to be performed east of Commerce, is costing the city. Tuesday night council members passed a resolution authorizing an agreement with Hayter Engineering for services on relocation of utility lines along Highway 11. In a few months, TxDot will be widening Highway 11 from where it intersects Culver Street east to the Sulphur River or Hopkins County line. The City of Commerce is required by the state to widen the placement of its utility lines so that it doesn't interfere with construction.

Mosquito spraying this month in Commerce

Commerce – Beginning this week and continuing throughout the month the City of Commerce will be spraying insecticide to help control the mosquito population. While the product sprayed is of low toxicity to people and pets, direct contact should be avoided. Spraying, to take place during peek mosquito biting hours, will be evenings beginning at 7 p.m. Residents are advised to stay indoors when the spray truck is in your area.
