Commerce voters to decide bond issue Saturday

Commerce – Saturday's elections in Commerce not only feature candidates for Mayor and Council Seats 2 and 4, but a $3 million measure toward street improvements. Residents will be asked to vote yes or no for the bond, which will go toward improvements to no only streets, but possibly water and sewer lines below those streets. Streets to receive improvements will not be decided upon until the bond is in fact passed.

Early voting tallies for Commerce

Commerce – Early voting for Saturday's municipal elections in Commerce proved decent, as voters made selections for or against a street bond issue; and chose their candidates for Commerce Mayor, and Council Seats 2 and 4. 128 people made it out to the poles early. Recent history has shown low voter turnout with less than 500 votes cast both last year and in 2004. There were no contested races therefore no elections in 2005 and 2006. Currently, Commerce has just over 4,000 registered voters.

Greenville sales taxes take deep cut

Greenville – The city of Greenville's local sales tax revenue is down this month. After posting months of record sales tax revenue gains, Greenville saw its take drop for this month significantly, according to the Texas Comptroller's Office. Greenville is in line to receive a sales tax payment of over $500,000 for the month, a decrease of about 10% from the record of $567,000 set one year ago.

Another house in Commerce yet again destroyed by fire

Commerce – Another house in Commerce has yet again been destroyed by fire. The fire occurred in the 1300 block of Lee Street. No residents are said to be living in the house, and no injuries have been reported. Officials were dispatched to the vacant house at 6:22 a.m. Thursday, and by 7 a.m. a majority of the fire had been contained. No other property appeared or was said to have been damaged. Firefighters with the Campbell Fire Department were also present assisting in the fire. The cause of the fire is not yet know.

Michigan resident shot dead following<BR>traffic stop near Greenville

Greenville – A recent traffic stop near Greenville leads to the shooting death of a Michigan resident. A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper performed the stop on the 18-wheeler along Interstate 30 late Sunday night. Trooper Bubba Goodwin, with the Greenville DPS office, is said to have been speaking with the driver of the truck when the passenger brandished a knife. Goodwin then opened fire, killing the suspect. He's been placed on administrative leave while the investigation into the incident is conducted by the Texas Rangers.

Big traffic changes coming to Greenville

Greenville – There will soon be some big traffic changes coming to Greenville. The reconstruction of the State Highway 34/Wesley Street overpass across Interstate 30 is getting closer to starting. An engineer with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Paris District office in Greenville said the agency anticipates letting the $32 million project out for bids by the end of this week. The Greenville City Council in February formally committed to paying $2 million toward the cost of rebuilding the overpass.

Rockwall man arraigned in robbery case

Rockwall, Greenville – A not guilty plea has been heard in connection to a recent bank robbery. Jose Martin Guevara was arraigned Friday during a court hearing. An attorney was also appointed to represent him. Guevara was indicted late last month by the Hunt County grand jury in connection with the alleged Jan. 3 robbery of the American National Bank location in Greenville.

Greenville welcomes newest city official

Greenville – This week is your chance to meet the new Fire Chief in Greenville. The City of Greenville has scheduled a reception for Raul Reyes, Jr., for Tuesday. The City Council confirmed Reyes as Chief during their April 22 meeting and his first day was Friday. The reception is between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday inside the conference room of the Municipal Building, in downtown Greenville.
