Toxic fumes force shutdown on Interstate 30


Caddo Mills – Officials have confirmed that Wednesday's shutdown of Interstate 30 was due to a smoking tanker which was spraying toxic fumes across the roadway.

The incident occurred along the eastbound frontage road, but also affected the interstates main lanes and westbound frontage road.

Wreck leads to inquiry into local stabbing


Delta County – A woman is being questioned by Delta County authorities after she was found hiding in a ditch near the scene of a motor vehicle wreck early Wednesday morning.

Hopkins County deputies were first dispatched to the scene at around 12:40 a.m. near the intersection of FM 71 West and CR 2285 to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The woman, who was believed to have been driving the vehicle, was found about a mile from the wreck.

Services scheduled for Commerce drowning victim


Commerce – Donations are being accepted for Diamond Bronston, the nine-year-old girl who drowned Sunday at the Commerce City Pool.

Bronston had just completed third grade at A.C. Williams Elementary School. Her family is accepting donations to help cover funeral expenses through the A.C. Williams front office between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. this week. Checks are to be made payable to the school.

Possible break in missing persons case


Sulphur Springs – More than a month after her disappearance, investigators say they have a person of interest in the case of missing Sulphur Springs resident Melissa McVay Darling.

A man seen leaving with Darling on June 10 from the Chotaw Casino in Grant, Oklahoma has been questioned but not arrested.

The investigation, which involves authorities in Sulphur Springs, as well as in Oklahoma and Lamar County is described as intense.

Several cases cleared in Paris burglary arrests


Paris – Lamar County Crime Stoppers are again thanking residents for their help in solving a string of burglaries in the area.

Authorities believe they've cleared four cases with the arrest of 25-year-old Robert Joseph Bankston and 21-year-old Jeremy Dewayne Spivey, both of Paris. Each was taken into custody on warrants for burglary of a habitation stemming from the investigation.

County prepares as wildfire threat increases


Sulphur Springs – Hopkins County Judge Chris Brown has authorized a disaster declaration for the county, citing the recent lack of rainfall and dry conditions.

Judge Brown signed the proclamation Tuesday, for the purpose of implementing controls aimed at mitigating threats posed by wildfires during the current dry weather.

Three vehicle accident results in death


Lamar County – A Lamar County man has died following a wreck Monday morning that injured three others.

The Department of Public Safety says 51-year-old John David Shelton, of Pattonville, was attempting to make a turn when he was rear ended and spun into oncoming traffic.

The accident occurred along Highway 82 near the intersection of FM 2121.

Another area county to consider burn ban


Bonham – Fannin County Commissioners Monday morning will consider whether to implement a ban on outdoor burning.

The item is part of their regular meeting, to take place in the courthouse in Bonham.

Area counties already under burn bans include Collin, Franklin, Kaufman, Wood and Van Zandt.

As of Sunday, there were 239 Texas counties that had imposed restrictions on outdoor burning, as the state continues to struggle with record drought.

Major road project scheduled to break ground


Greenville – The $3.3 million project to rebuild Traders Road in Greenville is formally set to begin this week.

More than 5,000 vehicles use the thoroughfare each day, as the roadway connects the even busier Jack Finney Boulevard and Wesley Street/State Highway 34.

The Greenville City Council intends to reduce street speeds during the construction phase.

Paris Police make major arrest over the weekend


Paris – Two men are in custody at the Lamar County Jail following their alleged involvement in a Paris burglary resulting in over $100,000 in loses.

Police say that 44-year-old Billy Steven Nowden, of Michigan, and 48-year-old Charles Cleveland Nowden, of Cedar Hill, Texas, have been charged with theft.
