Miss 4th of July Vay Gillean celebrates 97 years


Enloe – Vay Gillean isn't just average royalty. She will be crowned Enloe's Miss 4th of July on Saturday, July 2 at the town's parade. However the 4th of July isn't just about honoring Independence Day, many will be celebrating with Vay Gillean on her 97th birthday.

"I feel so blessed. I do what I can and that's all I can do," the very spry Vay Gillean said on her upcoming day.

Investigation underway after post office vandalism


Pecan Gap – Despite the reported burglary at the Pecan Gap Post Office sometime over the weekend, the facility has had no interruption to daily business.

The suspect or suspects reportedly gained entrance through the back of the building; scattering mail in their quest for what authorities believe was cash.

Post Master Brad Stallings could not comment in detail about the investigation, only to confirm it was burglarized either Friday night or Saturday morning.

New claims made in Commerce vs. Throgmorton


Greenville – Mayor Quay Throgmorton is now alleging fraud and slander against the City of Commerce as part of a counterclaim recently filed in the ongoing lawsuit between both sides. The Mayor is also asking that a declaratory judgment be granted in his favor.

Suspect in solicitation case says he's innocent


Greenville – A local school district employee has pleaded not guilty to sending sexually explicit text messages to a minor child.

Ronny Thomas Trevilion, of Cumby, is due back in court in August. The alleged offense occurred on February 7.

Trevilion, a former employee of the Rains ISD, was arrested earlier this month and remained in custody as of Wednesday morning.

Burn ban count of Texas counties rises


– The record number of Texas counties with outdoor burn bans has reached 236 as the drought continues.

A Texas Forest Service map Thursday showed southern and northeast parts of the state as the only areas without burn bans. Texas has 254 counties.

Texas in January 2006 had a record 221 counties with outdoor burn bans, but that mark was broken earlier this month during wildfires and lingering dry weather. The Texas Forest Service says nearly 3.3 million acres have burned during the current wildfires season.

Local community college makes tough cuts


Grayson County – Grayson County College has dropped its men's and women's basketball programs due to state budget cuts.

The college will lose a total of $1.2 million in state funds. College officials say by eliminating the basketball programs, the college will save $340,000.

Karim comes to Commerce from Pennsylvania, and has more than 24 years experience in corporate and higher education.

Missing college student found dead at park


Paris – The body of a Paris Junior College student found Monday has been sent for an autopsy.

24-year-old Maukessa Carlisle had been reported missing that afternoon before a resident spotted her vehicle at Wade Park and alerted police.

Carlisle, a native of Marshall, Texas, was found dead inside a Dodge Durango. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
