Large crowd anticipated for naming ceremony


Greenville – Tour guides are sought as the City of Greenville prepares to welcome an estimated 5,000 visitors to town for the White Buffalo Naming Ceremony on June 29.

The rare, white buffalo, which was recently born just outside of the city, is considered sacred by the Sioux.

One injured, another sought in stabbing


Greenville – One person was hurt and another person sought following a Monday morning stabbing. The incident occurred in the 3600 block of Short Street in Greenville at approximately 2:24 a.m.

After responding to the scene and making contact with a witness, officers located a male subject who had been stabbed, telling police he was involved in a physical confrontation with a Hispanic male. The victim was unable to provide the name of the person who stabbed him but did give a description.

CISD changes transfer policy, approves budget


Commerce – The Commerce ISD hopes a policy change will help attract more transfer students this coming school year.

School board members Monday night approved a change to its interdistrict transfer guidelines, allowing students who live outside the district to apply for transfer at any time, provided they meet requirements for attendance, academic achievement and conduct. Previous policy enforced a May 1 application deadline and didn't require a transfer student meet certain academic criteria.

Mennonite Community in Fairlie Stresses Quality in Lone Star Sheds

Texas Leads Nation in Ghost Sightings; Commerce Area Haunted


Commerce, TX – Online reports show that as of June Commerce is an active area for ghost sightings. Among the states logging 24,646 national, Texas leads all other states with 3,262 hauntings recorded, followed by 2,063 in California and 1,140 in Ohio. Puerto Rico trailed all other American affiliates with only 52 incidents while Delaware logged 53 and Wyoming 73.

City's western development moving forward


Greenville – The first vote to approve a new development plan for West Greenville is scheduled for this week by the Planning and Zoning Commission.

A public hearing will be held prior to the vote, scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The Small Area Plan, consisting of 27,000 acres, is expected to help guide development over a wide region of the western edge of the city and along the Interstate 30 corridor. The plan will also play a role in setting standards for the proposed giant municipal utility district.

Local officials cracking down on illegal dumping


– Hunt County gets high praise from a statewide agency aimed at instructing officials on illegal dumping.

John Ockels is the director of the Texas Illegal Dumping Resource Center, based in Sherman.

The non-profit organization, now in its fifth year, conducts dozens of seminars each year that helps expose law enforcement and elected officials to illegal dumping laws.

Vehilce of missing woman located


Hugo, Oklahoma – The pickup of 33-year-old Melissa McVay Darling has reportedly been found near Hugo, Oklahoma. But the Sulphur Springs woman remains missing.

Police are continuing to develop leads, and have declined to release further information so as not to jeopardize the investigation.

The Paris Police Department, Lamar County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers and Oklahoma authorities have joined the investigation.

Cumby resident behind bars for solicitation


Greenville – A Hopkins County man has been arrested and charged with using a text message to solicit sex from a minor.

The indictment issued last month alleges Ronny Thomas Trevilion, of Cumby, sent the sexually explicit text to a minor female child on February 7.

A warrant was issued from Hunt County for Trevilion's arrest on June 13, and he was arrested two days later. He remained in jail Friday on $50,000 bond.
