Large indentity theft investigation expands


Greenville – A Rains County woman faces additional charges related to already one of the biggest identity theft investigations locally.

26-year-old Stephanie Marie Bain, of Point, was indicted by the Hunt County Grand Jury Friday on three counts of engaging in organized activity and one count of fraudulent use of identifying information.

An interim hearing is scheduled for May 25, the same day Bain is to appear on seven previous indictments.

Hunt County Grand Jury indicts Commerce man


– A Commerce man is indicted for allegedly stealing a vehicle from the impound lot of the police department in December 2009.

Charles Dwayne Gilbreath also reportedly broke into a residence in June, 2010 where he allegedly stole a television, two computers and a gold ring, among other items.

The two indictments were handed down Friday by the Hunt County Grand Jury. Police believe Gilbreath acted alongside another man in both incidents.

Theft charge issued connecting local murder


Hopkins County – Another person is named in connection to this week's murder of a Hopkins County resident.

40-year-old Sarilu Mettlen, of Pennsylvania, is charged with theft after confessing to pawning some of the items stolen from Bobby Riley's home.

The 62-year-old Riley was reportedly strangled by 43-year-old Brian Allen Tucker, of Mesquite. Tucker is believed have committed the crime while attempting to steal items from Riley's home in the Mahoney community.

Paris Police make arrest in store burglary


Paris – A Lamar County man is arrested after allegedly stealing a television from the Paris Rent-A-Center.

The merchandise was located inside the vehicle of 43-year-old Darrell Fitzgerald Kearney, of Powderly, after he was stopped by police Monday evening.

A witness reported seeing a dark colored SUV leaving the area of the burglary and traveling at a high rate of speed. After locating and stopping the vehicle, police discovered Kearney in possession of a stolen TV.

Grant to assist CISD Communities in School


Commerce – The Commerce Rotary Club has made a $2,000 commitment toward the Commerce ISD's Communities in Schools program.

Funding will go toward the purchase of high interest books and educational games that community mentors will use to help at-risk students stay in school. T

Purple Heart returned to family of fallen soldier


Ector – A missing Purple Heart is returned to a Fannin County woman, whose brother-in-law had died while serving in World War II.

The military award was discovered inside a rental truck by a Sherman family who, after several hours of searching, located the relatives of W. L. Duckworth Jr.

Standoff in Commerce ends without incident


Commerce – Officers responded Tuesday evening to the scene where they were told by witnesses that a woman inside a residence had fired a gun towards a family member.

The incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in the 1700 block of Sycamore St.

Negotiators called to the scene were unable to make contact with the woman, and a Joint Special Response Team was called out and made entry into the house. Inside, they detained the woman without incident.

Second judge to hear attempted murder case


Greenville – The trial of Lola Danielle Cherry, of Greenville, was transferred this week from the 196th District Court to the 354th District Court.

Cherry is accused of trying to kill her newborn daughter on Halloween night in 2009. She's pleaded not guilty.

Her attorney, Russell Brooks, had filed and was granted a motion to dismiss 196th District Court Judge Steve Tittle from the trial, as Tittle was the prosecutor in an earlier felony case in which Cherry was the victim.
