Abused animals seized in Kaufman County


Kaufman County – About 50 dogs have been rescued from an alleged East Texas puppy mill, the same location where hundreds more animals were seized two years ago.

Kaufman County authorities and workers with the Animal Rescue Corps say the dogs were found living in deplorable conditions and had no access to food or water.

73-year-old Margaret Boyd remains in jail charged with animal cruelty and violation of probation.

More than 500 animals were seized from the same property in August of 2009.

Realism of Racism revealed in Greenville


Greenville – The status of racism in the local community will be the focus of a public meeting Thursday evening.

The two hour seminar, titled The Realism of Racism, is set for 7 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Greenville.

The event is free and open to the public, and is designed to provide residents with a deeper understanding of the definition and exposure to the analysis of racism in the community.

Local events planned for Day of Prayer


– Delta County residents are among the millions nationwide asked to come together Thursday as part of the National Day of Prayer.

The event will take place at noon on the Delta County Courthouse steps. Everyone is encouraged to gather and honor the freedom of religion.

The Hunt County Courthouse will also play host to the Day of Prayer, beginning at noon, with this year's theme titled "One people, One Accord."

Large indentity theft investigation expands


Greenville – A Rains County woman faces additional charges related to already one of the biggest identity theft investigations locally.

26-year-old Stephanie Marie Bain, of Point, was indicted by the Hunt County Grand Jury Friday on three counts of engaging in organized activity and one count of fraudulent use of identifying information.

An interim hearing is scheduled for May 25, the same day Bain is to appear on seven previous indictments.

Hunt County Grand Jury indicts Commerce man


– A Commerce man is indicted for allegedly stealing a vehicle from the impound lot of the police department in December 2009.

Charles Dwayne Gilbreath also reportedly broke into a residence in June, 2010 where he allegedly stole a television, two computers and a gold ring, among other items.

The two indictments were handed down Friday by the Hunt County Grand Jury. Police believe Gilbreath acted alongside another man in both incidents.

Theft charge issued connecting local murder


Hopkins County – Another person is named in connection to this week's murder of a Hopkins County resident.

40-year-old Sarilu Mettlen, of Pennsylvania, is charged with theft after confessing to pawning some of the items stolen from Bobby Riley's home.

The 62-year-old Riley was reportedly strangled by 43-year-old Brian Allen Tucker, of Mesquite. Tucker is believed have committed the crime while attempting to steal items from Riley's home in the Mahoney community.

Paris Police make arrest in store burglary


Paris – A Lamar County man is arrested after allegedly stealing a television from the Paris Rent-A-Center.

The merchandise was located inside the vehicle of 43-year-old Darrell Fitzgerald Kearney, of Powderly, after he was stopped by police Monday evening.

A witness reported seeing a dark colored SUV leaving the area of the burglary and traveling at a high rate of speed. After locating and stopping the vehicle, police discovered Kearney in possession of a stolen TV.

Commerce – The Commerce Rotary Club has made a $2,000 commitment toward the Commerce ISD's Communities in Schools program.
