Residents cautioned during peak flu season


– Area health departments are recommending now is the time for individuals to get vaccinated to prevent the spread of flu.

Dr. Rick Selvaggi with Live Oak Professional Center in Commerce says we're now into that peak time for becoming ill. He says there's never too many preventative measures you can take, as there are a number of ways to easily get sick this time of year, both with the flu and a cold.

Local authorities to crack down on drunk driving


Greenville – Hunt County law enforcement is out in force this weekend to crackdown on drunk driving.

Attorney Joe Littlefield announced the "No Refusal DWI Weekend" begins Friday and runs through early Monday.

If a person is arrested for driving while intoxication and refuses to submit to a breath or blood test, a search warrant will be requested from a judge.

Hunt County authorities have already conducted three unannounced "No Refusal Weekends," with the latest coming over the New Year's holiday.

McKinney man pleads guilty to local bank robbery


Greenville – Justin DeShawn Simmons, of McKinney, pleaded guilty Thursday to holding up the Bank of America in Greenville in September, 2009.

Simmons' alleged co-actor, Donte' DeBryce Brumfield, also of McKinney, has pleaded not guilty and scheduled for trial later this month. No weapons were used and no one was injured in the holdup.

Simmons had reportedly met with an employee of the bank five days earlier to apply for a loan, which was denied due to an outstanding balance with the bank.

New residence hall at A&M-C taking shape


Commerce – Crews are working to finish the decking on the 82,000 square foot, three-story facility before installing drywall.

Director of Facilities David McKenna says before long we'll be able to see all the details of the building come together.

The project is part of an even bigger goal of having 3,000 students living on campus within five years.

ERCOT no longer in emergency situation


Associated Press – Northeast Texans can breathe a sigh of relief, as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas is not planning any rolling blackouts again Thursday, as it did Wednesday.

The company had warned of taking action again due to high demand, but according to Oncor Spokesman Stan McKey, electricity usage did not reach the critical stage.

Customers are still being advised to turn down their thermostats.

Greenville and L-3 dispute heating up


Greenville – L-3 Communications Mission Integration has won a temporary restraining order against the City, preventing the filing of a re-plat of Major's Field Municipal Airport, on which the L-3 facility is located.

A hearing will now take place February 15 to determine a permanent injunction against the re-plat, as well as damages and compensation.

Foster homes sought for rescued horses


Quitman – A Wood County judge has awarded True Blue Animal Rescue custody of the 26 horses seized from a pasture in Yantis last month.

True Blue is now seeking foster homes for the horses, all of which are ten years or younger. Although none of them are in good health, they're conditions are improving.

On January 24, authorities rescued the horses from a location near Highway 154 described as unbearable, with the dried up ground serving as the animals' only source of food.

Regents to discuss nursing program at A&M-C


College Station – The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents meet over the next two days to discuss various items throughout the system, including a possible nursing program at A&M-Commerce.

The action item calls for board members to consider approval of the new Bachelor of Science in nursing program at the University. If approved, the program would be implemented this fall.
