A&M-Commerce percussion students to perform at PASIC


Commerce – Texas A&M University-Commerce percussion students will perform Thursday at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Indianapolis, Ind., an honor they received after winning the Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition earlier this year.

Council postpones utility bill amendment


Greenville – The Greenville City Council has delayed action on residential complaints regarding their utility bills.

The city was to vote regarding an amendment to the way utility charges are assessed and collected.

But Mayor Tom Oliver stated more meetings were needed among city departments to address the issue.

The changes were proposed after complaints from multiple residents about their utility bills were received.

Dedistricting plans underway in Greenville


Greenville – The City Council is working to determine whether the boarders of the city's six single member districts need to be redrawn.

On Tuesday, council hired a consultant to make sure the districts are in compliance with federal voting regulations, once the results of the 2010 Census are delivered next month.

There is a chance that redistricting may not even be needed.

Sulphur Springs crime unit makes drug bust


Sulphur Springs – 26-year-old Alex Brandon Hagood has been arrested by the Sulphur Springs Special Crimes Unit for possession of marijuana.

Officers executed a search warrant at an apartment on Helm Lane and seized 11 plants and irrigation equipment.

Hagood could face more charges in connection to the incident.

SURRMA seeks highway funding from legislature


Commerce – The Sulphur River Regional Mobility Authority (SURRMA) will look to the state legislature this upcoming session for highway funding.

During its latest meeting, held Tuesday in Commerce, the SURRMA board voted to move forward on submitting a funding package to lawmakers by the first of the session.

The board's first two projects are to obtain funding for the widening of a 17 mile stretch of Hwy 69 in south Hunt County, and the widening of about a ten mile stretch of Hwy 24 between Commerce and Cooper.

Hunt County to celebrate Veterans Day Wednesday


Greenville – County Judge John Horn will serve as the master of ceremonies during the first of several ceremonies scheduled across the area this week.

The event begins at 10 a.m. on the steps of the Hunt County Courthouse. The schedule also includes the posting of the flag by the Hunt County Veteran's Honor Guard and patriotic music from the Greenville High School Band.

State Representative Dan Flynn will serve as the guest speaker.

Grant to aid Grayson County emergency operations


Sherman – Grayson County Commissioners have accepted a $270,000 federal grant to maintain and enhance emergency services.

The Homeland Security Grant Program through the Texas Department of Public Safety will benefit first responders and other emergency management agencies in the county. Communications upgrades, including maintaining Grayson County's Code Red Emergency Notification System, will be items of focus.

Bill to ban K-2 statewide filed for upcoming session


Bryan, TX – A State Representative has pre-filed a bill for the upcoming legislative session that would put a statewide ban on the controversial product K-2.

Although a number of Texas cities have already restricted the sale of the product, including several locally, people may still be traveling to areas where it isn't banned to get it. That's why Bryan Republican Representative Fred Brown says he filed the legislation.

K-2, when smoked, is said to give a marijuana-like high.
