Motorists to experience another year of repairs


Greenville – About a year of work remains for construction to continue along Interstate 30 in Greenville.

According to TxDot, work is almost finished on one local overpass with the replacement of another overpass across the interstate scheduled to hit high gear early 2011.

Area Engineer Craig Miser says the next big step in the process will be the final opening later this month on both sides of the highway at the Monty Stratton Overpass and the road that runs underneath.

Fannin County man charged with murder


Fannin County – A Saturday shooting in Fannin County leaves one resident dead, and another charged in the alleged murder.

The shooting happened in the 3400 block of County Road 2250. The body of Michael Davis, of Telephone, was found by authorities upon arrival on scene. Ivanhoe resident Russell Lyles is now facing murder charges.

Deputies say the two men knew each other, but they aren't releasing any other details, as the investigation is on-going.

A&M-Commerce recognized by Carter Bloodcare


Commerce – Texas A&M University-Commerce faculty, staff and students aren't just making a difference in the classroom, they're also impacting lives in the community by donating blood. Carter Bloodcare recently honored A&M-Commerce for having the "Highest Number of Donors Among Colleges and Universities" within the 36 country region for 2009.

Commerce to address budget this week


Commerce – The proposed budget for the City of Commerce includes a 6 cent tax increase; from .76 to .82 cents per $100 valuation and a $700 raise per employee.

During a recent budget workshop, a majority of council gave consent to not conduct a search for a new city manager this fiscal year. The proposed budget does not include any additional funding for streets.

On Tuesday, council will meet in executive session for a "discussion regarding salary adjustments for the Interim City Manager and Accounting Supervisor".

Student hit by truck along Hwy 11 after exiting bus


Hopkins County – A Como-Pickton ISD student was injured Friday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle traveling along Hwy 11.

The crash occurred at the CR 2331 intersection in Hopkins County.

Reports indicate the bus was pulled over following a minor wreck and in the process of unloading students when a pickup truck hit the seven-year-old. The truck reportedly had to take evasive action to avoid colliding with one of the stopped vehicles behind the bus.

Memorial Stadium receives significant upgrades


Commerce – Texas A&M University-Commerce sports fans will be treated to in-game replays, statistics and live video feed at Memorial Stadium thanks to a new 55-by-31 feet scoreboard, which is currently the second largest in NCAA Division II.

$75,000 grant awarded to Cooper City Park


Cooper – A grant worth $75,000 will help Cooper officials renovate and further develop its 17-acre City Park.

The approved funding from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department was announced this week.

Proposed elements for the park include the renovation of the trail, tennis courts and rodeo chutes, as well as the development of a basketball court, RV campsites and a garden.

Alphin murder trial postponed


Greenville – It will be a little bit longer before testimony begins in a Hunt County murder trial.

The first of what is expected to be two capital murder trials involving a 2008 shooting death has been delayed.

During a Wednesday pretrial hearing for Tracie Danielle Alphin, the start of jury selection was reset from Sept. 27 to Nov. 8.

All-day pretrial hearings will now occur Sept. 30 and Oct. 30. The trial is expected to take two weeks.
