Deadly weekend wreck in Van Zandt County


Canton – Four North Texas motorcyclists area dead and a Houston man charged with criminally negligent homicide after his car reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic Sunday near Canton.

Thirty-one-year-old Jose Luis Pena is being held on $2 million bail in the Van Zandt County jail.

Homicide victim identified, suspects still sought


Greenville – The search continued Tuesday for two suspects in connection to the weekend murder of a Greenville man.

Police have now publically identified 21-year-old Javan Newman as the victim of Saturday's shooting, which occurred in the 1600 block of Joe Ramsey Boulevard. Newman later died at a Dallas hospital.

Robbery suspect to change plea Wednesday


Greenville – A guilty plea may be forthcoming for one of two men charged with armed robbery in Commerce.

Larry Donnell Clark Jr., of Greenville, had previously pleaded not guilty. But according to court records, Clark Jr. is scheduled to issue a new plea during a hearing Wednesday.

Parvis Raynell Clark Jr., of Commerce, has also pleaded not guilty to his involvement in the crime.

Flood stages still closely monitored during drought


– As the State of Texas battles severe drought, officials with the local chapter of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are keeping a close eye on the flooding along the Missouri River.

Jerry Cotter with the agency's Ft. Worth districts says the last time local crews were that busy was in 2007 when major flooding effected portions of North Texas.

But it would take a lot of that to happen this year.

Public to receive Texas legislative recap


Greenville – Two Northeast Texas representatives in Austin plan to give a recap of the recent legislative session.

The latest Wake Up to the Issues breakfast in Greenville features District 2 State Senator Bob Deuell, of Greenville, and District 2 State Representative Dan Flynn, of Van. The two combined to tackle issues in both the House and Senate chambers like a school finance package, a state budget and redistricting.

Monday could bring increased danger of wildfires


– The Department of Public Safety has already asked folks not to use fireworks this Fourth of July.

"We're very concerned that the combination of high temperatures, no rain and high winds are going to create some situations that will be very dangerous," says DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange.

Many Texas counties have burn bans and some are prohibiting the sale of fireworks. However, several Northeast Texas counties have not been officially regulated from burning.

Another major highway project scheduled locally


Hunt County – In about a week, TxDot and its contractor plan to begin rebuilding the underpass of FM 1903 at Interstate 30.

The nearly $672,000 project calls for complete reconstruction of the pavement under the interstate between the two frontage roads.

The project will require closing the intersection and detouring traffic for approximately six weeks. The anticipated completion date is the end of August.

Suspects sought in Greenville homicide


Greenville – The crime occurred just after 1 a.m. Saturday at 1600 North Joe Ramsey, Apartment A204.

The victim was transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center and later Parkland Hospital in Dallas where he died from his multiple gunshot wounds. The man's name has still not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Witnesses to the shooting have named 25-year-olds Devin Eugene Royal and Antonio Derrance Fletcher, both of Greenville, as suspects. I

HRMC's cardiac care center moving forward


Greenville – An agreement has been reached as to who will manage Hunt Regional Healthcare's new cardiovascular services center when it opens next year. The hospital this week finalized negotiations with Baylor's Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital.

"We are elated to announce this important partnership," said Richard Carter, CEO of Hunt Regional Healthcare. "It will be very meaningful for us to be able to draw on the experience of a premier heart center as we build our new program in cardiac care."

Children's Museum to host Holiday Market


Commerce – Northeast Texas Children's Museum has announced plans for its Saturday, October 15 transformation into a market for a holiday gift sale.

As a fundraiser for the Children's Museum, fees from booth space and tickets for entry will benefit the museum. Vendor applications are now available at www.netxcm.com and should be completed and returned to the Museum by July 15.

A vendor jury will evaluate the applications to provide both quality and variety for the event. Areas have been marked for up to 39 booths for this inaugural event.
