Sales tax allocations mixed for area cities


– According to a report by the Texas Comptroller's Office, the City of Greenville's sales tax revenue collected in August was significantly higher than year's total from the same month. The payment comes in at more than $537,000, an increase of nearly four percent from last August.

Royse City received a payment of over $117,000, equal to a more than five percent increase.

A payment of over $91,000 to the City of Commerce over the same time period represents a decrease of over four percent.

Local man's disappearance still a mystery


Bonham – Family members of Fannin County resident Jack Morris gathered Thursday at the location he was last reported seen, exactly one year ago.

Morris disappeared August 12, 2009. He was last seen at FM 1550 and HW 271 just outside of Bonham.

West Tawakoni man arrested in drug bust


West Tawakoni – Law enforcement is reporting the breakup of an alleged methamphetamine lab in south Hunt County.

A search warrant conducted along Mays Lane in West Tawakoni Tuesday found meth and instruments to manufacture the drug, along with several marijuana plants.

Earl Wayne Yates was arrested and charged with manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. Bond was set at $10,000.

Wednesday wreck kills Greenville resident


Greenville – Greenville resident Chris Mayo has died from injuries received following a one-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the 46-year-old Mayo died when the pickup he was driving ran into a tree. His vehicle reportedly left the roadway while traveling westbound on CR 2246, just off State Highway 34.

Mayo was said to have not been wearing his seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Funeral services were pending as of Thursday.

CISD names first Hall of Honor class


Commerce – The inaugural selection for the Commerce ISD's Hall of Honor Class includes a former state champion coach, a pioneering philanthropist, a nationally renowned MIT graduate and tireless community volunteer.

The district recently announced plans to pay tribute to Harry Champion, Dr. Jack Pirkey, Emmet Day Sr. and June Dunn. The four will be recognized during a community luncheon and during pregame activities at the Tiger homecoming football game on October 1.

Stores hope sign changes will bring back business


Greenville – The switch to one-way frontage roads along Interstate 30 in Greenville has city officials creating bigger signs to aid businesses.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) last month converted the roads as part of the overall effort to replace the State Highway 34/Wesley Street overpass.

Assistant City Manager John Adel said the move was not warmly received by motorists or local businesses.

Wreck kills former police officer, young boy


Wood County – A retired Tyler police officer and his 7-year-old grandson are dead following a wreck in Wood County.

It happened on FM 14, a few miles north of State Highway 154.

State Troopers say 54-year-old Dan Ross, of Winona, was traveling with his grandson when his truck drifted off the road, crashed into some trees and caught fire.

They were pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsies have been ordered.

Wanted felons captured after running from police


Commerce – What started as a noise complaint leads to the arrest of two wanted felons in Commerce.

Police were called to an apartment along Durham Street on two separate occasions Monday night. Upon attempting to make contact with the resident on their second visit, three men ran out the back door.

Captured were 18-year-old Larry Donnell Clark and 19-year-old Tremier Denard Kelly, both of Commerce. A third suspect got away and had not been located as of Thursday.

Dart sentenced to prison for making bomb threats


Paris – A Paris bomb threat suspect is given six years in prison after pleading guilty to creating the hoax.

Clinton Dart entered the guilty plea Friday to three counts of making a terroristic threat, all third degree felonies.

On July 20, employees of the Lamar County Courthouse and Paris Police Municipal Courts Building were evacuated as authorities searched the facilities. Nothing suspicious was found.

Greenville City Council talks tattoos


Greenville – Council gave final approval Tuesday to a tattoo parlor in a shopping center at 3207 Wesley Street.

Where the parlors may be allowed to open in the future may soon be the subject of additional city regulations.
