Commissioners scale back retirement package


McKinney – Collin County Judge Keith Self says county workers should get less government matching funds for their pensions in a time when average citizens do not have similar benefits.

Commissioners voted Tuesday to scale back the county's employee retirement package, but not to the extent that Self wanted.

The vote was to reduce the county's match from $2.50 to $2 for every employee dollar contributed into the Texas County and District Retirement System. That match is on par with Dallas and Tarrant counties.

Fire danger looms as drought worsens


– The drought and fire danger continues to increase in the region.

As of Tuesday, the only area county under a burn ban was Kaufman County. But area fire departments are asking residents to take precautions to lessen their risk of becoming a fire victim.

Rains and Hunt counties continue to rank as the driest in the state. Through Tuesday, Rains County had an average reading of 698 on the Keetch-Byram Drought Severity Index. 800 is the highest possible reading. Hunt County had an average reading of 695 on the index.

Greenville store robbed at gunpoint


Greenville – Suspects are sought in connection to a reported armed robbery at a Greenville convenience store.

Hunt County Undersheriff Joe Knight says the incident occurred early Tuesday morning at the Valero store on U.S. Highway 380 west of the City.

The clerk on duty at the time says two men, both with their faces and/or heads covered, entered the story and demanded money. One of the men is described as white, 5'8'' tall, and the other black and about 6' tall.

Regents' Scholars Program prepares for inaugural class


Commerce – The Texas A&M University-Commerce Regents' Scholars Program (RSP) will be welcoming 24 outstanding freshmen to its fall 2010 inaugural class. Students were selected through an application and interview process, and will receive a scholarship equivalent to full tuition.

Gunman believed to have planned major attack


McKinney – Investigators say the man who opened fire at the McKinney Police Station Tuesday morning apparently hoped for a massacre.

Patrick Gray Sharp, of Anna, died after a shootout with officers. The Collin County coroner has stated Sharp committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. A motive is sought.

Latino teens experience A&M-Commerce Listo Camp


Commerce – Twenty seven Latino high school students recently got a taste of college life after participating in Texas A&M University-Commerce's Alumnos Listo!: A Summer Camp for Exploring College, Careers and Cultura. The project is available thanks to a five-year, $1.2 million Project Listo! grant, which prepares teachers to better serve English Language Learners (ELLs).

Anna man identifed as gunman in McKinney shooting


McKinney – Police say the man who opened fire at the McKinney Police Station yesterday morning may have been trying to draw people out of the building and blow up a trailer loaded with explosives.

29-year-old Patrick Gray Sharp, of Anna, was found dead following a shootout with police.

The campus was immediately put on lockdown after the shots were fired, which occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Students were also notified through the college's emergency alert system. No students, faculty or staff were injured.

Applications now being accepted for Police Academy


Greenville – The Greenville Police Department is now accepting applications through September 1st, for the Citizens Police Academy.

The academy, which is scheduled to start September 13, will cover topics in Communications/911, Patrol Operations, Crime Prevention, Narcotics, Tactical Unit, K-9, DWI Procedures, Family Violence, and Criminal Investigation/Crime Scene. Students will also get to "ride along" with an Officer.
