Search warrant nets cocaine, marijuana


Commerce – Commerce Police arrested two people Saturday after executing search warrants in the 100 block of Sunrise Street.

At the residence officers seized 17.6 grams of cocaine, 7.73 ounces of marijuana, 1 prescription pill and tools commonly used in drug trafficking.

Taken into custody were 20-year-old Kendall Marquell Henry and 23-year-old Tonetta Lasha Askew.

Boles ranks among most improved schools


Greenville – A recent study by Children at Risk lists Boles High School as the fourth most improved high school in North Texas.

The Most Improved list was a part of the Houston-based non-profit organization's annual rankings of public schools across the state.

Twenty schools made the Most Improved list, which featured campuses that made the greatest gains in test scores and other measures over the past three school years.

Greenville resident killed in wreck


Hunt County – State Troopers are reporting the death of Greenville resident Jerry Ray Moser, following a single vehicle wreck over the weekend.

The 76-year-old Moser was pronounced dead at the scene the crash, which occurred along FM 3427 near Kingston.

State Troopers say the pickup he was driving left the road, struck a culvert and bar ditch and then ended up in a dirt embankment.

Ceremony honors Deputy for heroism


Cooper – Delta County Sheriff's Deputy Paul Robertson was honored over the weekend for his heroic efforts during last month's incident at the Commerce Wal-Mart.

Robertson was off duty when 29-year-old Artenio Rodriguez entered the store brandishing a weapon. In an attempt to subdue the gunman, Robertson was shot once and Rodriguez was killed. Rodriguez had arrived at the store following a chase which began in Greenville after he reportedly shot several rounds into the air.

Sixth Court of Appeals to meet in Greenville


Greenville – A case originating in Hunt County will be heard this week in Greenville by the Sixth District Court of Appeals.

The court is scheduled to hear arguments in two cases when it meets Wednesday morning, including an appeal of a conviction for drug possession from Hunt County.

Scott Lee James versus the State of Texas is the first case on the docket.

Council to address curfew ordinance


Greenville – The Greenville City Council intends Tuesday to renew the city's juvenile curfew ordinance.

If the Council votes to renew the ordinance, it would remain in place until 2013.

Since 1995, juveniles in Greenville have been forbidden from being on local streets between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, between midnight and 6 a.m. weekends and between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. school days. The ordinance does not apply directly to students who are home-schooled.

Traffic stop leads to drug bust in Commerce


Commerce – A Commerce man was arrested Friday afternoon, found in possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop.

Officers stopped the vehicle occupied by a female and two males for an obscured license plate. The female driver had an expired driver's license.

Upon doing a pat down for weapons a Commerce man was found to be in possession of a crack pipe. Consent to search the vehicle was then given which yielded approximately .5 grams of crack cocaine.

Memorial fund set up for accident victim


Sherman – A memorial fund has been set up to assist the family of 19-year-old Malorie Elise Bullock, of Sherman, who died Thursday night following an accident near Campbell.

Police chase suspect sentenced to prison


Greenville – A prison sentenced has been handed down in connection with a chase through Hunt County and possession of drugs.

Sonny Lynn Gann of Caddo Mills was sentenced Thursday to prison for leading officers three area law enforcements agencies in a February 2009 chase.

He pleaded guilty Thursday to one count each of evading arrest with a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, resisting arrest and prohibited substance in a correctional facility.

Plea heard in Commerce sexual assault


Commerce – A not guilty plea has been entered in connection with two reported sexual assaults and a residential burglary in Commerce.

Damien DeShuan Brown had received an indictment for each of the charges. Brown entered the not guilty pleas Thursday. An attorney was appointed to represent him and an interim hearing set for May 4.
