TxDot to host elderly & disabled transportation program


Paris – A workshop regarding TxDOT's Elderly & Disabled Transportation Program is scheduled for later this month in Paris.

The purpose of the workshop is to evaluate the current year's activities, review plans and goals for the next two years, and to select projects for FY 2011.

Regional residents who are interested in elderly and disabled transportation are invited to attend. Counties to be impacted include Delta, Fannin, Franklin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Lamar, Rains and Red River counties.

Sulphur Springs teen killed in wreck


Como – A Sulphur Springs teenager has died from injuries received following an early morning wreck Friday just east of Como.

According to State Troopers, Jordan Scott Hurley was driving along Highway 11 when he attempted to pass a vehicle into oncoming traffic, overcorrected, ran off the road and hit a tree.

The 17-year-old Hurley was pronounced dead shortly after midnight by Justice of the Peace Yvonne King.

Greenville – A public forum gives minority residents a chance to express issues affecting the community.

Reatta Fort with the Department of Justice's Community Relations Service was in Greenville Thursday to learn what the public wanted addressed by the agency, as it seeks to help restore racial stability and harmony.

City looking into skywalks to enhance safety


Commerce – The City of Commerce is exploring funding options for skywalks at both university crosswalks in town.

Interim City Manager Marc Clayton said Tuesday he's received interest from the public into the skywalks following recent accidents at the Highway 50 and Culver St crosswalks. He's since found that TxDot has fully funding similar projects in the past.

University's Jones addresses budget cuts


Commerce – Budget cuts were among the topics addressed during the latest installment of the President's Perspective that aired June 2 on KETR.

Due to the state's projected multi-billion dollar budget shortfall, all state entities have been asked to cut five percent of their budgets. For A&M-Commerce, that amounts to $3.2 million.

Last month, the university submitted their list of cuts to the State of Texas, which has since been approved.

Ft. Hood shooting victim continues treatment


Rochester, MN – The Army Staff Sgt. from Lone Oak who was one 32 people injured during the Fort Hood massacre is now being treated at a Minnesota facility.

29-year-old Patrick Zeigler recently arrived at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. 13 people were killed in the Nov. 5 attack.

The alleged gunman, Major Nidal Hasan, appeared in court this week, where a judge granted a postponement in the start of his trial until October.

Area businesses eligible for disaster loans


– Small, non-farm businesses in 16 East and Northeast Texas counties are now eligible to apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration.

These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by the excessive rain that occurred in several Texas counties from October 1, 2009 through March 31 of this year.

Area counties eligible include Hunt, Hopkins, Rains Lamar, Delta, Red River, Van Zandt and Wood.
