Foul play not a factor in death of inmate


Sulphur Springs – Hopkins County authorities are reporting the death of an inmate early Wednesday morning inside his cell.

Foul play is not suspected in the death of 30-year-old David Allen Robinson, of Sulphur Springs, who is said to have a history of medical problems. He was found dead shortly after 3:30 a.m.

An investigation, however, is being conducted and an autopsy has been ordered.

Wood County student shot and killed


Alba – Wood County authorities are investigating the death of teenage boy, who was reportedly shot in the chest Tuesday afternoon.

A witness is calling the death of 16-year-old Loren Wayne Saunders an accident. The incident occurred at Chaney Point RV Park #2 on CR 1590 in Alba. Saunders was a student at Alba-Golden High School.

Commerce takes no action on lawsuit


Commerce – The Commerce City Council takes no action on the pending litigation against its Mayor, who is being sued for repayment of funds in relation to a 2005 development project.

Council met in executive session Tuesday night to discuss the matter.

On January 11, City Attorney Jim McLeroy filed a lawsuit against Mayor Quay Throgmorton and his wife, Paige, regarding a reimbursement agreement in excess of $55,000 for the Rosemound Addition project.

City to again test sewer lines Wednesday


Commerce – The City of Commerce is again informing residents they'll be conducting smoke testing of sewer lines Wednesday during normal business hours to check for any problems.

While the smoke is not harmful, if it appears in your house there could be a problem with the drain system of your home, which may allow harmful sewer gases to enter your home.

Tuesday's testing will occur near the east end of Charity Road, Choctaw, Arapaho and in the area near Wal-Mart.

Hunter paid tribute during final board meeting


Commerce – It was a melancholy farewell to Bonnie Hunter during Tuesday night's Commerce School Board meeting.

Board members and Superintendent Blake Cooper expressed their deep appreciation for Hunter, who has served as Cooper's administrative assistant for the past two years, and been with CISD for the past 18 years.

Local rally scheduled for Rachel's Challenge


Greenville – Phoenix Charter School in Greenville is inviting the community hear a story of courage and hope, as they bring Rachel's Challenge to Hunt County Thursday.

Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, 1999. She's left a legacy of treating others with kindness and compassion to help change the world.

Trial date set in South Hunt County murder case


Greenville – Lanny Dean Campbell, of Wills Point, is currently free on $100,000 bond for the alleged slaying of James Michael McKinnis.

McKinnis was reportedly a visitor at Campbell's home in January, 2010 when the shooting occurred. Campbell has pleaded not guilty.

Trial in the case is to commence on February 21.

Assault on peace officer case to be heard next month


Greenville – The 2009 case of a Greenville man shot by a Hunt County Sheriff's deputy will soon see its day in court.

Charles Boyd Rose could face up to life in prison if convicted. He remains in the Hunt County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer, for which he's pleaded not guilty.

A February 21 trial date has been set.

New York couple busted with drugs in Hunt County


Greenville – The husband and wife, whose names were not given, were stopped for speeding Saturday while reportedly on their way home from the Dallas-area.

Trooper Phillip McKenzie was given consent to search the vehicle and discovered approximately 45 pounds of marijuana inside a luggage bag.

The couple's two-year-old daughter, who was riding in the vehicle at the time, was transferred into the care of Child Protective Services.
