Alarm scares off would-be arsonist


Titus County – Another possible arson attempt at an East Texas church is thwarted after a burglar alarm was triggered, apparently scaring off the subject.

Titus County authorities are now searching for a man caught on videotape outside the First Baptist Church taking off his shirt and changing into another. He was then filmed tying a white cloth or piece of clothing around his nose and mouth.

Officials to discuss proposed animal shelter


Bonham – A proposed animal shelter in Fannin County is expected to be a topic of discussion during next week's Bonham City Council meeting.

County residents have expressed interest in a new facility, donating approximately $190,000 to the cause. A grant worth $40,000 was also recently awarded. But it may take another $50,000 plus to fund the building's construction, and then additional costs to maintain it.

Group investigating recent shootings


Hunt County – The NAACP has opened an investigation into the recent shooting deaths of two men by local law enforcement officers.

The NAACP State Conference has launched a formal inquiry into the shootings of Edward Markeist Wheaton and Vincent Thomas.

Two Mt. Pleasant men killed in wreck


Upshur County – A two vehicle crash in Upshur County has left two Mt. Pleasant men dead. The accident occurred along Highway 271.

Troopers say 46-year-old Trenton S. Davis and 41-year-old James Winford Harris were killed when the vehicle in which they were riding hydroplaned on the wet roadway and slid into the path of a pickup.

The truck driver, Hooks resident Joel Terral, was not injured.

KETR to provide election coverage Tuesday


– The political party primarie takes place across Texas Tuesday. Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday for the elections.

Voters will be choosing among candidates for everything from Congress, to Governor and State Legislature, to County Judge, County Commissioner and Justice of the Peace.

Given the numbers of candidates in some races, should there be a need for a primary runoff election, it will be conducted April 13.

Paris man gets 38 years for hate crime


Paris – A Paris resident and admitted member of the Aryan Circle white supremacist prison gang has received a 38 year prison sentence.

32-year-old Jeffery Lee Rogers was sentenced after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery. Rogers reportedly held a knife to a black man's throat to rob him because of his race.

The case was prosecuted as a hate crime and Rogers must serve half of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Over 60 animals seized in Van Zandt County


Van Zandt County – Another recent seizure by the SPCA of Texas found 63 starving longhorns in rural Van Zandt County.

The animals, reportedly weak and emaciated, were found late last week living among more than 50 cow carcasses and piles of bones.

An official with the SPCA said the dead longhorns on the property may have posed a threat to neighbor's health as well.

Later this week, a judge will decide who will receive custody over the remaining animals.

Another candidate files for CISD Board


Commerce – Gabe Wittkopf has become the fourth candidate to file for the Commerce School Board. Wittkopf, seeking the position of Place 2, will oppose Elva Resendez in this May's municipal elections.

Also having filed are incumbents Bob McLeroy and Russell Armstrong for Places 1 and 3, respectively.

Five candidates are currently in the running for the Commerce City Council.
