Prison time given in injury to child case


West Tawakoni – A West Tawakoni man is sentenced to prison on two separate acts of injury to a child last April.

Christopher Scott Frye was facing up to life in prison if convicted on either of the original indictments of injury to a child by an act. Instead, Frye pleaded guilty Tuesday to lesser charges.

Under a plea bargain arraignment, he received the maximum punishment of 20 years in prison on each count.

Hopkins County man killed in wreck


Titus County – State Troopers are reporting the death of a Hopkins County man following a one vehicle wreck the I-30 service road in Titus County.

Reports show 50-year-old Morris Glenn Orren of Saltillo ran off the road and became airborne. The car then hit a concrete embankment and ended up in a creek.

Orren was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the accident is continuing.

Council to address water rates, park improvements


Commerce – The Commerce City Council Tuesday is expected to adopt a second reading amending the city's water and waste water rates, effective April 1.

The proposed increases are based on a recent survey that follows a ten year, staggered rate increase plan.

Two more candidates file in Commerce


Commerce – A fourth candidate has filed for the Commerce City Council. Bob Monday is looking to retain his seat as Council Place 4.

He is currently unopposed in his quest for a second straight term, as is Mayor Quay Throgmorton, who filed last week. Billie Biggerstaff is seeking re-election for Place 2 while Douglas Rohrabaugh is challenging.

Candidate's forum to take place in Paris


Paris – A political candidate's forum is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Love Civic Center in Lamar County.

As of Friday, 19 area candidates had accepted the invitation to appear at the forum.

They include candidates for U.S. Representative District 4 and District 3, Justice of the Peace, Chief Justice, Lamar County Court at Law: Lamar County Judge: County Commissioner and County Treasurer.

Early voting for the March Primaries begins Tuesday.

Grand jury to investigate recent homicide


Hunt County – No arrests have been made or are expected in last Thursday's shooting death near West Tawakoni.

Hunt County Undersheriff Joe Knight said the investigation into the homicide is ongoing and at this time no charges have been filed pending an upcoming grand jury investigation.

Elderly man killed by school bus


Bonham – Authorities say an 80-year-old man out for a walk yesterday morning near Bonham was struck and killed by a school bus.

Andrew Dosser was struck by a BISD bus around 7 a.m. No students were on board at the time. Officials say it was not yet daylight, and Dosser was wearing dark clothes.

Superintendent Sonny Cruse said the school bus driver and the bus monitor on board will not face any disciplinary action. Neither were injured in the accident, which occurred near FM 1396 in the Lake Bonham area north of town.

Teenager charged with sexual assault


Paris – Paris Police have arrested a teenage suspect in an alleged sexual assault.

18-year-old Cody Lee Owens was recently taken into custody and charged with six counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and five counts of indecency with a child.

The report finds the victims were 9 and 10 year old children he had access to.

The revelations came following interviews with the children conducted by the Child Advocacy Center in Paris.
