Four area runoff elections scheduled


– There will be at least four runoff elections in the region from the GOP Primary on April 13.

Residents who have not yet registered to vote and wish to participate in the election can do so by March 15.

Anyone who voted in the Democratic Party Primary cannot vote in the Republican Party runoff.

Voters to decide on Special Utility District


– A Commerce-area water supply chain is seeking to become the newest special utility district.

On May 8, voters will decide whether the North Hunt Water Supply Corporation be allowed to convert to the North Hunt Special Utility District.

A temporary board of directors for the SUD was appointed during a special meeting last Thursday.

If approved by voters, the SUD would cover the same area as the North Hunt Water Supply Corporation, including the areas outside of Commerce, Wolfe City and Ladonia.

SPCA awarded custody of animals


Van Zandt County – A judge has granted custody of more than 60 starving longhorn cattle to the SPCA in McKinney.

An attorney for the owner of the cattle said Tuesday's decision will be appealed.

Van Zandt County Justice of the Peace Ronnie Daniell says the animals were ``unreasonably deprived of food.''

The longhorns were seized Friday by deputies who found dozens of dead animals on the property in a rural portion of the county. Sheriff Pat Burnett Jr. says the investigation continues.

Shelter to change euthanasia tactics


Sulphur Springs – The Sulphur Springs animal shelter will soon move to a more humane approach to animal euthanasia, converting from carbon monoxide gas to lethal injection.

The city is expected to receive supplies within a few weeks.

Last week, council approved a motion directing staff to move forward with the practice, which is also projected to save on operations costs.

Man charged with practicing medicine illegally


Paris – A 41-year-old Paris man was arrested Tuesday after reports surfaced he'd been practicing medicine without a license.

Aldolfo Santiago Munoz Gonzales was taken into custody after police issued a search warrant in the 200 block of NW 24th Street.

Officers also found one bedroom set up like a doctor's office, a syringe on a desk and some medicine that was identified as one that requires a prescription.

Newspaper thefts considered serious offense


Commerce – Texas A&M University-Commerce has pursued disciplinary action for the football players involved in the East Texan thefts that occurred across campus Thursday Feb. 25.

"A&M-Commerce does not stand back idly when crimes like these are committed," said Dr. Dan Jones, A&M-Commerce president. "We hold our students and staff to a high standard, and will take appropriate action to remedy the situation."

Greenville murder trial reset


Greenville – A trial date in a Greenville murder case dating back to last summer has been reset.

Joshua William Lay has claimed he was acting in self defense when he shot and killed Darryl McDwayne Fegget, of Greenville, last August.

He's pleaded not guilty to one count of murder. Lay had been scheduled for trial starting next week, but during a hearing Tuesday the trial was reset for June 14.

The incident occurred at an apartment complex along Robin Road in Greenville.

Council to evaluate, possibly dismiss city manager


Commerce – For the second time since September, the Commerce City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing and discuss, possibly discipline or even dismiss City Manager Dion Miller.

Councilwoman Billie Biggerstaff requested the items be placed on the agenda, indicating the city manager has displayed a lack of leadership, people skills and methods of management. Upon contact, Biggerstaff declined further comment on the three items, indicating she would rather reserve comment until Thursday.
