Public meeting set regarding local reservoir


Ladonia – A public meeting is scheduled Thursday to discuss plans for a major reservoir north of Commerce.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Fort Worth District intends to conduct an information exchange meeting on historic resources for the proposed Lake Ralph Hall.

The meeting is scheduled from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at the Fannindel High School Cafeteria in Ladonia.

Council appoints construction development committee


Bonham – The Bonham City Council has appointed an ad hoc committee to develop plans for a number of construction and renovation projects within the city.

City Manager Corby Alexander says the current city hall is overcrowded and a new facility would free up space for the police department. The City would also like to create a better working environment for both the fire marshal and environmental services department, plus seek a new facility for the Senior Nutrition Center.

Donations sought for safe graduation


Commerce – Parents of the Commerce senior class of 2010 are requesting donations to help sponsor a "Drug-free and Alcohol-free Post-Graduation Party."

The function is designed to keep graduates in one place with adult supervision for several hours, thus lessening the probability that drugs and alcohol be included in their evening plans.

North Texas mission group in Haiti reportedly OK


Highland Park – A North Texas medical missions team in Haiti at the time of Tuesday's massive earthquake has survived.

Highland Park United Methodist Church's global missions program says the team of 12 from the church arrived last Saturday.

A local doctor got a text message from the team indicating they might walk the 23 miles to Port au Prince to help with the relief effort, after sleeping in a field overnight.

Two seperate structures destroyed in area fires


– A Lake Tawakoni cabin went up in flames Tuesday and the neighboring Lake Country Motel was extensively damaged on Hwy 276.

A dog was reportedly killed in the blaze. No other injuries were reported. Foul play is not suspected but the fire marshal is investigating.

In Rains County, at least one mobile home was destroyed and two others reportedly caught fire briefly Tuesday.

The incident occurred near Point. No injuries were reported. Large columns of smoke could be seen as far away as Mineola.

NFL Network responds to GEUS plan


Greenville – The future of the NFL on one Greenville cable system in up for debate.

Dennis Johnson, Director of Communications for the NFL Network and NFL.com issued a statement Tuesday in response to the local electric utility's announced plan to drop the NFL Network from its cable television line-up.

Johnson encouraged subscribers to GEUS cable to contact the company and tell them to keep the network's two channels.

Sheriff's office to purchase new drug dog


Hunt County – Hunt County commissioners on Monday approved a request from the Sheriff's Office to move forward with the purchase of a drug dog.

The county's current dog has been with the department for nearly five years, which is closing in on the typical term length for a drug dog.

Such a dog is expected to cost between $4,000 and $8,000. Funding would come from donations, seizure funds and services provided to local schools, such as sniffing lockers and hallways.

School building declared uninhabitable due to fire


Sulphur Springs – Officials at Sulphur Springs ISD have declared the High School AG and Technology projects building uninhabitable following a fire that left both smoke and water damage.

A main structural beam of the facility was warped by the heat.

Investigators believe the blaze started with a heating unit in the loft.
