Case of rabies reported near Commerce


Commerce – A case of rabies have been reported in Commerce. Local pet owners are being urged to take extra precautions to protect their dogs, cats and other animals, as a case of rabies has been reported.

Beckey Thompson with the Commerce Veterinary Clinic said a client, who lives about a mile outside of the city limits, brought in a skunk last week that had been killed by the client's dogs. Testing confirmed the rabies.

Man still on lose in alleged Van Zandt County muder


Van Zandt County – Authorities are still searching for an East Texas man, wanted for murder in connection to the shooting death of a rural Van Zandt County resident.

57 year old Michael Maurice Dupree is accused of shooting to death 72 year old Paul Marshall at a rural residence.

Dupree fled the scene in Marshall's 2003 Dodge Ram maroon van with Texas Plates X02-NVF.

Dupree should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

N. Hopkins ISD cancels classes amid flu concerns


Hopkins County – Due to concerns of flu-like symptoms among several students, the North Hopkins ISD has cancelled classes for the rest of the week.

There have recently been several absences in the district, and families are reporting their children are coming down with some type of illness.

Still, no cases of swine flu/H1N1 have officially been confirmed.

Council takes no action on discipline of city manager


Commerce – As part of a three hour meeting Tuesday, the Commerce City Council took no action on possible discipline of or removal of City Manager Dion Miller.

Councilman Tony Henry requested the item be placed on the agenda, citing several occasions of concern which included a failure by Miller to review and execute checks issued by the city, failure to pursue a water contract with Texas A&M University-Commerce, plus failure to seek council consent for contracts with outside contractors.
