Amnesty period near end in Greenville


Greenville – Time is running out for those with outstanding warrants in Greenville.

Approximately 1,000 people still owe more than $1 million in fines and court costs to the City of Greenville. Any of those individuals could face arrest later this month, if they don't settle their debts within the next two days.

Those owing fines have today and tomorrow left in an amnesty period, which will allow them to clear their records before a planned crackdown by law enforcement.

Wolfe City ISD to hold dedication ceremony


Wolfe City – A dedication ceremony is set for Sunday for the new Sidney Wasson Multipurpose Center at Wolfe City Elementary school.

The public is invited to attend the event, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. that afternoon.

The former superintendent Wasson served the district from 1947 to 1986.

Another Greenville gang member sentenced to prison


Greenville – Another Greenville gang member has been sentenced to prison.

Tony Ray Askew Jr., 21, of Greenville was indicted in May by the Hunt County grand jury on one count each of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and engaging in organized criminal activity.

Askew pleaded guilty Thursday to both charges.

Town Hall meeting on health care planned


Greenville – Residents throughout the region are invited Monday to Greenville for a town hall meeting to discuss health care reform.

The forum will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center, 5501 S. Business Hwy. 69.

Texas Medical Association (TMA), out of Austin, will be on hand at the event to answer questions on the issue.

Paris sex offender arrested after failing to register


Paris – A traffic stop in Paris Thursday leads to the arrest of a sex offender who failed to register, plus a drug discovery.

A check for warrants for the vehicle occupants revealed that Ricky Patt had failing to register as a sex offender and was placed under arrest, along with another occupant for having outstanding traffic warrants.

Hunt County death row inmate loses appeal


Hunt County – One of two men sentenced to death row for a 1998 beating death in Hunt County has lost another appeal.

Former South Dakota residents Billy John Galloway and Kevin Scott Varga were both convicted in the capital murder trial of Maj. David Lawrence Logie.

On Wednesday, the 40-year-old Galloway lost the appeal, where he alleged ineffective assistance of counsel and a failure to present mitigating evidence of child abuse and drug abuse. Varga lost a similar appeal in April.

Greenville gang member gets 18 years in prison


Greenville – A local gang member receives prison time after pleading guilty to a string of crimes from October, 2008.

Under a plea bargain arrangement, 19-year-old Darrell Obrien Jackson, of Greenville, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on each of five felony counts; with the sentences to run concurrently.

He had been indicted on two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of engaging in organized crime and one count of aggravated kidnapping.

New attorney appointed for murder suspect


Greenville – A new attorney is appointed for a Greenville murder suspect. During a hearing Wednesday,

24-year-old Joshua William Lay was allowed to withdraw his previously appointed attorney, and a new attorney was assigned to represent him.

A hearing to determine whether Lay's bond will be reduced was set for next Tuesday.

Lay has been charged with the Aug. 27 death of Darryl Dwayne Feggett, of Greenville. He has reportedly confessed to the shooting and the murder weapon has been found.

Commerce burglary suspect given probation


Commerce – The second of two Commerce men, alleged to have burglarized a residence last December, is placed on probation.

Edward Joe Lopez had been scheduled for trial Monday.

Lopez, along with Favian Ontoin Brown were alleged to have used a firearm to threaten and rob two male victims of money in Commerce in June, 2008.
