Swine flu reported at Sulphur Springs ISD


Sulphur Springs – A student in the Early Childhood Learning Center at Sulphur Springs ISD has been infected with swine flu.

The child will be kept from school until a full recovery is made. He/she did not require hospitalization.

This is only the second case of H1N1 in Hopkins County since health officials began tracking the disease. Last month, the first two confirmed cases were reported in Hunt County.

Commerce seeking Safe Routes to Schools grant


Commerce – The City of Commerce has elected to pursue a grant for the Safe Routes to Schools Program to provide proper school accessibility for students.

To be eligible for the grant, the city and school district are required to submit a sidewalk plan to TxDot.

On Tuesday council hired KSA Engineers from Tyler to help develop the plan by the end of the month at a cost of $5,000. The firm will look at all intermediate campuses within the CISD to determine the proper plan.

Hearing Thursday in money laundering case


Hunt County – A broken light and failure to signal a lane change results in a driver's arrest for money laundering and possession of marijuana.

Christopher Dwayne Porter, of Washington, Texas, was arrested following the stop on August 25 in Hunt County.

A hearing for Porter, who is seeking a reduction in his $70,000 total bond, the appointment of an attorney or both, is set for Thursday.

100 most congested roadways in Texas released


– The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has acknowledged the 100 most congested roadways in the state, including some in North Texas.

The report shows the majority of roadways were of course in major metropolitan areas, such as Dallas, Tarrant and Harris Counties.

Number two on the list is between Interstate 635 to Woodall Rogers Freeway in Dallas County. The stretch of road is said to cause more than $4 million hours of delay each year, costing collectively $86.31 million annually.

Services pending in Wolfe City following fatal accident


Wolfe City – Services are pending for a Wolfe City resident, killed Tuesday night following a one vehicle accident just south of the city.

27-year-old Collin Owens was said to have rolled his pickup at around 9:30 p.m. on FM 512. According to Wolfe City Police, he was stable upon emergency arrival, but later died after being transported to Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

Owens is the son of Richard C. "Dickie" Owens, who is the operator of R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home in Wolfe City where funeral services are pending.

HW 11 utility relocation project making progress


Commerce – The City of Commerce is making progress with its Highway 11 utility relocation project, as mandated by the Texas Department of Transportation.

Council Tuesday night voted to proceed with the acquisition of easements along the highway.

There were five total easements to obtain before work could begin in those areas, with all but one now accounted for. The city does need to go to eminent domain on one of the easements. The district judge will need to appoint a three member panel to work out an agreement.

Firefighter injured, house heavily damaged in fire


Cumby – A house fire in Cumby early Wednesday morning leaves a firefighter injured and the home heavily damaged.

The fire was reported at about 1:45 and took about three hours to contain.

The injured Cumby firefighter has been identified as 26-year-old David Dunn. He was treated and released from Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.

Firefighters from also responded from Hopkins County, Miller Grove, North Hopkins and Campbell. The Red Cross provided aid to the firefighters and the residents of the home.
