Greenville to discuss charter amendments


Greenville – The Greenville City Council is scheduled to discuss potential amendments to the city's charter during Tuesday's work session beginning at 5 p.m.

A Citizens Charter Review Committee is to be appointed by the Council in the near future. The committee will be charged with coming up with recommendations on how to improve rules and regulations governing how the council, the city administration and related agencies do business.

School bus carrying 13 students crashes


Collin County – A school bus carrying students from Wylie East High School crashed into a residence this morning, but none of the 13 students on board were injured. No one inside the home was injured either.

The driver of the bus said that the accelerator got stuck, causing her to lose control. She was treated for cuts and bruises.

Collin County authorities say upon arrival they found the front part of the bus inside the home.

Local railroad traffic to be discussed


Greenville – Railroad traffic throughout Northeast Texas will be discussed Wednesday. The board of the Northeast Texas Rural Rail Transportation District (NETEX) is set to convene at 2 p.m. at the Hunt County Courthouse.

Agenda items include but are not limited to possible action on hiring a consultant firm, the adoption of the NETEX budget for the coming year and a discussion of legal issues related to the encroachment of property owners adjacent to the NETEX, as well as a report on operations of the Blacklands Railroad.

Local cities to take part in Nat. Night Out next month


Greenville – They're planning for a national night out in Greenville. Preparations are underway for next month's local observance of the National Night Out Crime Prevention Initiative.

The event is sponsored each year by the National Association Town Watch to encourage people across the country to come together and get to know each other, plus meet with law enforcement authorities and learn ways to prevent crime, drug abuse and violence in their community.

Officials report safe weekend on area roadways


– Traffic over the holiday weekend seemed pretty safe for the most part, according to area law enforcement.

DPS offices in Sulphur Springs and Sherman reported no fatality wrecks over the Labor Day weekend, a holiday that typically sees a big increase in vacationing motorists.

Figures will be released later this week regarding DWI arrests, speeding and seat belt violations. Officers were out in force over the weekend targeting drivers on interstates and highways.

Amnesty period approaching for Greenville citizens


Greenville – Greenville residents have only a few days remaining to clear up any outstanding fines.

When the amnesty period began Aug. 30, there were more than 1,200 names on the outstanding warrant list of persons, who owed more than $1.3 million in outstanding fines. Since then, only about $18,000 had been collected and 122 warrants cleared.

Those who pay their outstanding balances prior to the upcoming warrant round-up will avoid arrest, and can save money by avoiding a warrant fee and the cost of posting a bond.
