Maid Rite diner to come to Commerce?


Commerce – Iowa-based restaurant chain Maid-Rite Corporation, who recently expressed interest in opening a store in Greenville, may now do so in Commerce.

Executive Vice-President Tania Burt tells the Greenville Herald-Banner the company hopes to obtain property in Commerce owned by Mike Oglesby.

The property, located at the intersection of Monroe and Hunt Streets, is a brand new building composed of both commercial and residential space. The property is expected to come online sometime next month.

Two Lions take home LSC preseason honors


Commerce – The Lone Star Conference held its annual media day Thursday in Richardson, where league officials unveiled preseason polls and issued preseason awards.

Two student-athletes from Texas A&M University-Commerce received special recognition.

For Lion Football, Senior Defensive Lineman William Green was named the LSC North's Preseason Player of the Year. Green had 27 tackles, 12 solo, plus 3.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in 2008.

Area murder trial delayed

Hunt, Fanning County – An area murder trial has been delayed.

Trial for Bo Bailey Harris, of Gober, has been reset to October 26. Trial had been scheduled to begin August 10, but Harris' defense attorney requested and was granted a continuance in the case.

Harris is charged with the murder of William Ian Adams, of Greenville, in April, 2008. Harris reportedly has confessed to killing Adams at a location just north of the Hunt/Fannin County line.

No motive for the killing has been made public.

Greenville overpass project on schedule


Greenville – Construction continues on the Highway 34/overpass project in Greenville.

The overall project remains on schedule, according to Area Engineer with TxDot, Craig Miser. Work was estimated to be 22 percent complete as of early July; although Miser says the work is probably a little farther along by now.

Not guilty plea entered in area theft


Greenville – A plea is entered in connection to a theft at a Hunt County retail outlet.

Odessa Hatcher, of Commerce, pleaded not guilty last week to one count of theft of property of between $1,500 and $2,500 by aggregate amount. An interim hearing in the case is set for August 24.

Hatcher is alleged to have stolen over $1,000 in goods and $600 in cash from a local Wal-Mart during the course of 14 dates between September 2 and November 21, 2008.

New director named at Children's Museum


Commerce – Following a two month search, the Northeast Texas Children's Museum has announced Sharline Freeman as its new director.

Freeman, of Pecan Gap in Delta County, most recently served as a student teacher supervisor in the alternative certification program at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

She replaces Former Director Marypaz, who stepped down earlier this year after accepting a similar position in Massachusetts. Freeman had been serving as interim director since Marypaz's departure.
