Greenville – The board overseeing a tax zone in Greenville receive some extra help.

Members of the city's tax increment reinvestment zone Monday approved to retain the firm of Hawes Hill and Calderon to assist them in their quest of attracting economic development to Greenville.

Greenville murder trial finally underway

Greenville – A Greenville murder trial is now underway.

26-year-old Andreas Tearri Morris, of Greenville, is charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of 18 year-old Cordarien Marquel Kelly, also of Greenville, in July 2007.

Accused murderer sent to mental hospital

Sulphur Springs – An accused murderer from Sulphur Springs has been moved from the Hopkins County jail and taken to a state mental hospital.

Additional details as to why 34-year-old Jerry Chadwick Clayton was recently transported to the facility were not given. Efforts to reach lead investigator in the case Lieutenant Rusty Stillwagner were unsuccessful.

150 protestors show in Paris

Paris – About 150 protestors showed up Monday in Paris to express their anger of the dismissal of murder charges against two white men accused of fatally killing a black man.

Protestors staged the rally outside the Lamar County Courthouse. Members of the Nation of Islam and the New Black Panther Party were among the participants, who said they wanted to show their anger at a pattern of unequal justice for whites and blacks in Paris.

Commerce – Two men are arrested, one of which is pepper sprayed, after gunshots were reportedly fired in Commerce on Sunday.

Dontae Crosby and Robert Fields were transported to the Commerce Police Department before begin taken to the Hunt County Jail.

Wolfe City to discuss alcohol sales issue

Wolfe City – The Wolfe City City Council is scheduled to discuss the issue of alcohol sales at local merchants when it meets Monday night.

The council reportedly considered putting the item on the May 9 ballot, but could not meet certain deadlines. Like many other cities, alcohol sales would help boost sales revenue.

No petitions regarding the issue have yet circulated, but if enough signatures were received and the petitions approved by Hunt County, the item would be placed on the November 3 ballot.
