Hunt County to remain under burn ban

Hunt County – The Hunt County Commissioners Court Monday took no action on the County's current burn ban.

Hunt County Fire Marshall Richard Hill says the same items that existed when commissioners put the ban into place still exist, noting the amount of dry grass remaining throughout the area.

All 13 Hunt County fire departments are reported to have expressed desire for the burn ban to remain in effect.

Dairy Queen burglary suspect sought in Paris

Paris – Lamar County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information regarding a burglary in Paris.

The crime occurred in the 2500 block of Lamar Avenue during the night of Wednesday, December 17. Unknown persons are reported to have forced entry into a Dairy Queen where they forced open a safe and removed an undisclosed amount of cash. No information as to the identity of the suspect or possibly suspects in the case.

Garland man charged in New Year's Day shooting

Commerce – A Garland man remains in custody at the Hunt County Jail charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection to recent shooting in Commerce.

Carlos Anthony Mahr, 24, is alleged to have shot Cedric Lamone Lewis, 20, and Raymond Weatherall, 17, both of Commerce, early New Year's Day. There's been no word on why the shots were fired.

Large crowd attends Dr. Morris' memorial service

Commerce – Approximately 400 people gathered Saturday in Commerce to celebrate the life of Dr. Jerry Morris, President Emeritus at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church in Commerce. Morris, the ninth president at A&M-Commerce, died last month following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 73.

Among those who spoke at the event were his son Neil, Former Chancellor of the A&M-System Barry Thompson, and the tenth President of A&M-Commerce Dr. Keith McFarland.
