Commerce, TX – When Grammy winner and guitar virtuoso introduces the first songwriter performing an original composition on third Thursdays at 7:30, Cowhill Express in downtown Commerce comes to life with some of the best vocals and vibes this side of Nashville. This past Thursday had a strong lineup of all-male songwriters presenting two compositions each in Jerald Thomas' friendly musical venue in the backroom at Cowhill Express.
Commerce – A benefit for a Commerce High School student who suffers from kidney disease is scheduled for this Saturday.
16-year-old junior Kamryn Smith was diagnosed with the illness at age 14.
Ruby Hudson is a friend of the family. She says, "They [doctors] told him that he'd probably be 20 years old before anything could happen to him, and six months ago his mother went in to get him up for school and she had to rush him to Children's Hospital. She was told then that both kidneys are gone."
Cooper – Last week's meeting of the Cooper ISD Board addressed the upcoming budget year, facilities and included the approval of campus handbooks.
Superintendent Jason Marshall gave the final report on the Special Legislative Session stating overall the district will suffer a $170,000 net loss from State revenue. Board President Thomas Darden stated he was thankful the district was not hit as hard as many other districts.
Greenville – During a press conference Thursday afternoon, Greenville Police Chief Daniel J. Buskin said police had a videotaped confession from Micah Brown acknowledging his involvement in the shooting death of his ex-wife, Stella Brown. He is expected to be formally charged sometime Friday morning.
Caddo Mills – Caddo Mills High School teacher Stella Michelle Ray, who was slain Wednesday in Greenville, will be remembered tonight in a candlelight vigil. The vigil will be held at 8pm at the Caddo mills High School.
Ray was described by family as a "very happy spirit" and dedicated teacher. Ray carried a lifelong self-imposed nickname of "Doc" and was no more proud of the name than when she earned her Doctorate from A&M-Commerce in December.
