Commerce – The Commerce ISD Hall of Honor selection committee has begun seeking nominations for its second class of inductees.
Instituted to recognize former CISD and Norris School students who have had distinguished careers and staff who have made a significant impact on students, the CISD Hall of Honor will strengthen and acknowledge the heritage associated with Commerce schools, according to Superintendent Blake Cooper.
Winnsboro – A Wood County man is dead after shooting his ex-girlfriend and then turning the gun on himself.
Danny Harvey, of Winnsboro, reportedly shot through the door at the Autumn Ridge Apartments and hit Patricia Favors in the leg. Investigators say he then entered the apartment and shot himself in the chest.
Harvey was pronounced dead after transported to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. Favors was treated and released.
Gunter – A victim of last week's tornado that hit Tuska, Oklahoma is laid to rest in North Texas.
Ava G. Walkup was a resident of Southmayd in Grayson County. Funeral services were held Tuesday.
Walkup was in Tuska visiting her sister last Thursday when the storm hit. Her sister, Sammie, was also killed, when the tornado struck her double-wide trailer home. Sammie's husband is currently hospitalized in serious condition.
Last week's storms are blamed on multiple deaths throughout the southern United States.
Commerce – Over $16,000 in pledges were received over the weekend at the Commerce ISD's annual Boots N BBQ fundraiser.
"Each year, participation in the event exceeds our expectations, "said Dr. Jack Pirkey, president of the Commerce Schools Educational Enrichment Foundation. "Hearing the budget cuts education is facing, members of our community have shown they value education through their generous donations, even in a struggling economy."
Greenville – Trial is delayed and a new arrest warrant issued after a local woman, charged with aggravated robbery, fails to appear in court.
Vanessa Robles Rodriguez, of Greenville, is one of three people allegedly involving in a violent purse snatching last year outside a store. All three were later arrested after the suspect and a witness to the crime informed law enforcement.
After Rodriguez failed to show for Monday's hearing, her bond was revoked and her immediate arrest ordered.
