Major corporation to close Northeast Texas plant


Paris – Employees of the Sara Lee plant in Paris learned Wednesday that the global consumer-goods company will close in approximately two and a half months.

The Paris News reports the closure impacts nearly 150 employees at the facility, which earlier this year downsized operations by 260 positions.

There were indications as early as last year that Sara Lee would eventually move out of the Paris market after the company announced plans to shut down all but one production line.

Fatal hit-and-run investigation still ongoing


Hunt County – The search continues for the driver who reportedly struck and killed a Farmersville man as he stood along the side of Interstate 30.

Charles William Sleeman was killed Sunday evening when he exited his pickup truck near the 97 mile marker to check on a vehicle he was towing and then was hit by a passing car.

The vehicle struck Sleeman but did not stop, and authorities believe the driver may not have realized that they hit someone.

Veterans paid homage through memorial project


Paris – A monumental dedication is in the works as residents of the Red River Valley prepare to install a Veterans Memorial.

Former serviceman Doug Weiverg is the chairman of the Veterans Memorial Committee.

"Our Red River Valley Veterans Memorial is one we think is going to raise the bar for our part of Texas," Weiverg said. "It's a football field size; 300 foot by 126 feet wide, and it's being built for all veterans, past, present and future."

Sulphur Springs doctor appointed to statewide post


Sulphur Springs – Local physician I. L. Balkcom IV has assumed duties as the new president of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians.

A physician with the Medical-Surgical Clinic in Sulphur Springs, Dr. Balkcom was sworn in during the group's Annual Session and Scientific Assembly in Dallas on July 30.

Local instructor named finalist for Teacher of the Year


Paris – Paris ISD instructor Jennifer Ray has been selected as the Region 8 Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Ray, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Paris Junior College in 1994 and Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1997, will now compete against 17 other regional instructors for Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Thalian Culture Club auction set for August 20th


Commerce, TX – The Thalian Culture Club is hosting its annual fundraiser - a signature and live auction - on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 6:00 pm at Sand Hills Country Club. The annual event is the organization's only fundraiser of the year, and supports numerous local charitable efforts, as well as provides scholarship opportunities for eligible seniors from Commerce High School.
