Lamar County instructor charged with sexual assault


Paris – 34-year-old Shanda Swanner has been charged with improper sexual relationship between an educator and a student and sexual assault of a child.

The former Chisum High School substitute teacher is accused of having sexual relations with a 17 and 16-year-old student off campus.

An arrest warrant for Swanner was issued last Thursday. She turned herself in on Friday.

Commerce PD investigate drive-by shooting


Commerce – Several vehicles were damaged following reports of multiple shots fired in Commerce last Friday.

Calls regarding the alleged gunfire were made by residents in the Durham Homes area, located just west of City Park.

According to Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews, about eight shots were fired from what witnesses said was a green Chevrolet Trailblazer just before midnight. The vehicle was then seen headed toward Hopkins County on State Highway 11, but authorities were unable to locate.

Three students recipients of bilingual scholarships


Austin – Texas A&M University-Commerce graduate students Lizette Flores, Alma Ramirez and Mayra Vargas have been awarded scholarships from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health to support bilingual mental health services in Texas. All are students in the Department of Social Work.

Greenville Main Street receives high marks


Greenville – The Texas Historical Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation has recognized Greenville as a 2011 National Main Street City.

The announcement marks the tenth year in a row that Greenville has received the designation.

Cities chosen as National Main Street cities must show above average performance in categories including planning, preservation ethic and program assessment, among others.

East Texas church fire suspects to plead guilty


Tyler – Two men indicted in a string of arson fires set at churches in East Texas say they will plead guilty next week.

20-year-old Jason Bourque and 22-year-old Daniel George McAllister will appear in court Wednesday.

Bourque was indicted on five counts of arson and three counts of attempted arson. McAllister was indicted on two counts of arson and two counts of attempted arson.

The men were charged in one fire and suspected of setting up to nine others. Nobody was injured in the blazes.

Area youth to receive thousands of donated toys


Greenville – Thousands of Northeast Texas children will benefit from gifts through L-3 Communications this holiday season.

The company's annual toy drive, The Project Christmas Spirit campaign, provides gifts to families in need.

This year's goal was 5,000. But employees donated 6,400 toys and more than 160 bicycles.

The toys have been donated to more than 20 different community agencies in Hunt, Hopkins, Rains, Rockwall and Dallas counties.

Noted economist provides local insight


– While an economic recovery will remain slow to modest over the next several months for the state, things are looking up, says Dr. Ray Perryman of the Perryman Group.

He was recently in Sulphur Springs to present the economic outlook of Northeast Texas. Perryman says the mood of Texans is pretty good.

Grand opening set for new industry in Greenville


Greenville – Atrium Companies, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of residential vinyl and aluminum windows and patio doors.

A grand opening for their new vinyl extrusion plant is scheduled for January 5 along Industrial Blvd.

Earlier this year; Atrium signed a new lease agreement for the 120 square foot manufacturing facility. The factory is expected to initially employ 20 people, with future expansion likely.

The company currently operates three vinyl extrusion facilities throughout North America.

20 acres destroyed in Hopkins County fire


Dike – Hopkins County firefighters, as well as three volunteer departments responded Thursday afternoon to a controlled burn on CR 3511 in Dike that apparently got out of control.

Approximately 20 acres were burned.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Commerce – The Bois d' Arc Bazaar returns to Commerce this weekend, featuring stocking stuffers and gift solutions sold by regional artisans.

The event takes place Saturday from 1 until 5 p.m. at the Commerce Chamber of Commerce, 1114 Main Street.
