News Director

Mark Haslett comes to KETR having served at High Plains Public Radio in Amarillo, where he worked as News Director and later as Director of Programming. His work has been broadcast on National Public Radio, KERA, KCUR and other public radio stations. Haslett enjoys the privilege and responsibility of keeping communities well-informed. He has also worked as an editor and reporter at newspapers in the Southwest and Midwest. Haslett developed a passion for radio as a youth, when he helped his father, a program host at WRBC-AM in Jackson, Miss. He enjoys travel and has worked abroad in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Haslett is a graduate of Arlington High School and earned a B.A. in English from Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

Alcohol vote on tap in Bonham


Bonham voters will be deciding on alcohol sales in the May 10 election.

One proposition would legalize the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption only. This would only allow beer and wine sales in businesses such as grocery and convenience stores but would not allow package liquor sales or liquor stores.

The second ballot initiative would allow restaurants to serve alcohol without requiring "private club" memberships. It would not allow stand-alone bars or nightclubs.

Two council seats contested in Paris

In Paris, at least two city council seats will be up for grabs in upcoming elections, with two seats apparently safe as the incumbent is unopposed.

The Paris News reports that former councilman Edwin Pickle will run against incumbent Cleonne Drake for the District 6 seat, which represents east Paris. In District 3, incumbent John Wright will defend against challenger Benny Plata. District 3 represents south Paris.

Freezing rain, sleet, light snow possible Tuesday


A winter weather advisory is in effect for all of North Texas and most of Northeast Texas, including almost all of the KETR listening area. The advisory will remain in effect until 6 p.m.

Much of the region could receive a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow today, with rain possibly mixed in as temperatures climb toward the freezing mark later into the morning.

The planning process for the Texas Water Development Board now focuses on the 16 regions and the reginal plans. If you live in Hunt, Lamar. Delta, Hopkins, Franklin, Wood, Rains or Van Zandt counties, you're in Region D. The next board meeting for the region is Feb. 19 in Mount Pleasant. If you live in Collin, Fannin, Rockwall or Kaufman counties, you're in Region C.

West Tawakoni councilwoman arrested, jailed

The Quinlan-Tawakoni News reports that West Tawakoni councilwoman Laura Bailey Beckett was arrested at 10 a.m. today by the West Tawakoni Police Department on two sealed indictments issued by the Hunt County Grand Jury.

Chief of Police Brandon Kilpatrick said the warrants were in connection with an accident involving death and tampering with physical evidence, the report said.

“The grand jury indictment and warrants issued were in connection with the case that was being investigated into the death of Jackie Blaylock of Quinlan,” Kilpatrick said, according to the report.

UIL 2014-16 alignment and classification announced

Sulphur Springs will welcome Greenville and Longview into the district.

Go west, Commerce Tigers fans.

The Commerce football and basketball teams, along with their neighbors from Caddo Mills, will be heading west to face new district opponents Dallas Life Oak Cliff, Red Oak Life, Scurry-Rosser and Sunnyvale.

Greenville, meanwhile, will enjoy a more East Texas theme, with the Lions joining Hallsville, Longview, Longview Pine Tree, Marshall, Mount Pleasant, Sulphur Springs and Texarkana Texas High.
