News Director

Mark Haslett comes to KETR having served at High Plains Public Radio in Amarillo, where he worked as News Director and later as Director of Programming. His work has been broadcast on National Public Radio, KERA, KCUR and other public radio stations. Haslett enjoys the privilege and responsibility of keeping communities well-informed. He has also worked as an editor and reporter at newspapers in the Southwest and Midwest. Haslett developed a passion for radio as a youth, when he helped his father, a program host at WRBC-AM in Jackson, Miss. He enjoys travel and has worked abroad in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Haslett is a graduate of Arlington High School and earned a B.A. in English from Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

Go west, Commerce Tigers fans.

The Commerce football and basketball teams, along with their neighbors from Caddo Mills, will be heading west to face new district opponents Dallas Life Oak Cliff, Red Oak Life, Scurry-Rosser and Sunnyvale.

Greenville, meanwhile, will enjoy a more East Texas theme, with the Lions joining Hallsville, Longview, Longview Pine Tree, Marshall, Mount Pleasant, Sulphur Springs and Texarkana Texas High.

Reorganized state water board loses one member

The Texas Water Development Board has had its own governing board reorganized. Last year, the Texas Legislature replaced the six-member volunteer board with a three-member full-time board. Governor Rick Perry appointed three longtime associates to the new positions. But one of them - Mary Ann Williamson - has resigned, less than half a year after accepting the position. Freezing rain expected Sunday afternoon

While some parts of North Texas are expected to receive snowfall on Feb. 2, the forecast for the KETR service area features freezing rain instead.

Most of Fannin County, eastern Collin County and Rockwall County are expected to have some freezing rain this afternoon, with up to a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation expected on elevated surfaces.

Double shooting reported in Royse City

UPDATE, Jan. 31,  4:15 p.m. 

Officials have identified Kara Elizabeth Croop, 33, as the victim in the Jan. 31. Police said that her husband, Scott Croop, 39, shot her in the street outside of their home on the 400 block of Cookston Lane before shooting himself. Scott Croop was pronounced dead on the scene, while Kara Croop was severely wounded and transported to a Dallas hospital, officials said.

Dems: County clerk raised funds illegally

The Texas Democratic Party has alleged that a Rockwall County employee used a government facility to fundraise for the Republican Party.

The Texas Democratic Party has requested a criminal investigation into possible illegal election activity at the Rockwall County Clerk’s office, according to a release from the party on Jan. 29.

Also, the Democratic Party’s general counsel, Chad W. Dunn, has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Rockwall County Clerk Shelli Miller. The letter alleges that Miller has engaged in unlawful political fundraising.

Commerce food pantry seeks more space

The local food bank that serves Commerce needs more room. Commerce Food Pantry Inc. board president Dennis White told the city council at a Jan. 21 meeting that the agency has outgrown its current space, according to a report in The Commerce Journal.

White told the council that Commerce Food Pantry serves 45-50 families weekly, or about 200 people monthly. The food bank is open Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church on Monroe Street.
