2016 County Fair: In Review

The Delta County Chamber of Commerce would like to extend a huge appreciation to all of those participating, attending and sponsoring this past Saturday’s annual County Fair.

“It was a perfect day for a fair – showcasing local youth and their livestock, vendors had a great turnout and from the lawn tractors pulling their way to the end,” said Delta County Chamber Board Director President Kathy Houchins. “And the finale just sitting and relaxing to some great music that even got a rainbow. We are just so pleased – lots of fun in Delta County.”

The day began with a wonderful display of livestock and Ag mechanics by the local youth at the 2016 Bobby Wigley Memorial Livestock Show (see results below). Izabella McDaniel, who is competing for Miss Texas Princess, presented awards to the winners.

It continued with lots of vendors selling various crafts from crochet shawls to spice mixes and fundraising. Plus children were entertained by the big red fire truck of the Cooper Volunteer Fire Department and Delta County Sheriff’s office newest SUV as they were allowed to push the lights and sirens while sitting in the driver’s seat.

Following the show was the Lions Club annual Cow Patty Bingo which a portion of the proceeds went to a scholarship for a Cooper senior student. The winner was Delta County Chamber Vice President and Lions Club member Cindy Roller. Harley Davidson donated a lawn chair/cooler and framed motorcycle art to the Chamber for a drawing. Winning that drawing for the chair was J. Fieseler and for the Harley Davidson framed art was Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith. Sheriff Smith presented his winning to Deputy Zach Steward for his birthday which was Saturday.

Highlighting the afternoon was the Lone Star Garden Tractor Pullers Association annual tractor pull at the City Park in Cooper. The dirt work was provided by Rocky Young and the National Anthem was sung by Shawna Spangler. Lawn mowers of all classes pulled another crowd pleasing event for a large attendance with assistance from Rocky Young Construction preparing the ground work.

The afternoon continued with a special evening concert with local entertainers The Wide Open Band opening for the Monty Tipps Band on a stage under the twinkling lights near the tennis courts. The duo of Janis Thomas and Randy Willis performed a set of songs including Jolene by Dolly Parton with a special verse written for the modern day woman which was a hit.

Monty Tipps and his Mainstreet Band hit the stage with a tribute to Merle Haggard which drew a crowd. He took many requests from local celebs like famed Cooper Review author Eddie Trapp throughout the evening as a rainbow formed in the sky above Cooper. The band even paused to sing “Happy Birthday” to Deputy Zach Steward.

The band continued to perform until a round of showers eventually moved into the Delta County area creating a “rain check” on the concert. The Chamber Directors and audience gave a resounding applause for the performers before departing.

The Chamber also appreciates the support of the volunteers who take time to help make community events happen. Those include: Chamber Director President Kathy Houchins, Vice President Cindy Roller, Board Members: James Jarrell, Brenda Stewart, Mindy Hicks, Shelli Hilliard, George Stapp, Richard Roan, Kelly Hohenberger Chester, Kendra Huie Ingram and office manager Gracie Young.

2016 LSGTPA Results

Submitted by Jeff Duncan

The Delta County Fair played host to the Lone Star Garden Tractor Pullers Association's 2016 Season Opener, marking the second year the LSGTPA opened the season in Cooper, Texas.  Rocky Young Construction prepared an awesome 200 foot track for the competitors, at the Harmon Park facility.  The track consists of a great surface, with enough clay to provide excellent traction for tractor pulling.

The LSGTPA Youth Class competitors took to the sticky track first, with Lane Duncan taking the title aboard his 'Twisted Kitty' tractor.  Lane used a first round Full Pull to secure the win, in the debut of his brand new machine.  Jared Stephan scored the runner-up finish, aboard his 'Iron Head' entry.  Jacob Hovind made his LSGTPA pulling debut, scoring a third place finish aboard his 'Yes Deere' tractor.  Lane Duncan pulled double duty, piloting his 'Texas T-Rex' entry to a fourth place finish on the day.

Stock Class was won by Claude Lewis, with Steve McCarley taking the runner-up position.  James Helferich scored a third place finish.  In Hot Stock, Mason Hovind wheeled his 'Yes Deere' machine to first place for the Mean Green Pulling Team.  Kolby Langham finished with a second place posting, for the Longhorn Express Pulling Team.

The Big Stock Class saw a two way battle, with Jerry Toland pulling out the victory aboard 'Triple Deuce'.  Kolby Langham scored the runner-up, with a couple of wild rides aboard 'Texas Thunder'.  The Mini Rod Class crowned Colby Crowe the champ, aboard his 'Weekend Warrior' entry.  Crowe used a Full Pull in the opening round to lead the field, and never looked back.  David Houchen wheeled his 'Back In The Day' tractor to second, with Jerry Toland pulling to third aboard his 'Shinin Time' machine.  Sarah Crowe steered her turbo powered diesel '99% Moody' to fourth, with Paul Smith taking his 'Texan' tractor to fifth place.

The Super Rod Class was paced by Ken Langham Sr., aboard his 'Psycho' tractor, taking the win in the class.  Langham used a Full Pull in the second round, to secure the win.  Steve McCarley pulled to the runner-up position, with Randell Moody taking third aboard his 'Ridge Runner' tractor.  John Kiemele took a wild ride out of bounds aboard his 'Dodge This' tractor, with the DQ limiting the team to a fourth place finish.
