Abandoned child discovered in Commerce, mother faces charges

A 20 year old Commerce resident faces charges of endangering a child for leaving her child unattended in her apartment.

On August 7, 2014, at 3:21 pm, Commerce Police Officers responded to an apartment in the 1900 block of Caddo Street on a report of an unattended child.  On arrival, officers found a 22 month old small child inside a bedroom in the apartment.  The condition of the apartment was deplorable, according to the officers.  The apartment had no electricity and was extremely hot.  Due to the conditions in the apartment, the child was immediately taken to the apartment complex office by the manager.  At the time, the child was wearing soiled underwear covered with a department store plastic bag.  

While officers were on scene, the mother of the child showed up.  She was immediately arrested and has been taken to the Commerce Police Department where she will be booked in for endangering a child which is a second degree felony. 
 
A detective with Commerce PD was called to the scene for further investigation, as well as an agent with Child Protective Services. During their investigation, detectives found out that the child was left unattended in the apartment from 7 am, Wednesday, August 6 till the manager found her shortly after 3 pm on Thursday, August 7th.   The child was taken to the Commerce Police Department and CPS will continue the investigation for placement of the child.   Officers bought diapers, rash medicine, Pedialite, snacks and clean clothes for the child and he has been cleaned up and fed.  The child has also been taken to the hospital for evaluation.
