Agreement reached for Hunt County inmate labor

By Scott Harvey

Greenville – Hunt County Commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement between the county and the City of Greenville regarding inmate labor.

The county will provide inmate labor and deputy oversight on behalf of the city with a maximum of five inmates per deputy to be assigned to each project. Inmates may not work more than eight hours per day, unless approved by the Sheriff's Office.

Inmates would be used for projects such as clearing dead trees, brush and trash from vacant lots; cleaning trash from creeks, drainage ditches and roadsides and similar efforts which are approved by both parties.

Greenville will reimburse the county $300 each day for a deputy or jailer supervising inmates plus reimburse them for tool and equipment rentals and for inmate transportation.
