This week on Movie Picks with Alice Reese, Alice reviews Ricki and the Flash, starring Meryl Streep, The Gift, written, directed, and starred in by Joel Edgerton, and The End of the Tour, with Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel.
Ricki and the Flash was not Alice's favorite, but she is recommending it for people who enjoy music, Meryl Streep, and good performances and chemistry. Meryl Streep plays Ricki, a former stay-at-home mom who ran off to LA to become a rock star, who has to return to her past life to help one of the kids she left behind. Besides Streep's ability to do anything, other great performances come from her real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, Kevin Kline, and Rick Springfield.
The Gift stars Rebecca Hall and Jason Bateman as Robyn and Simon, a couple who seems to have everything until they run into Simon's old friend Gordo, played by Joel Edgerton, and their life begins to rapidly change. Alice was surprised by how original and suspenseful this movie turned out to be. She says you won't see the end coming, and I think she means it.
The End of the Tour is the story of five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace, which took place soon after the publication of Wallace's Infinite Jest. Jesse Eisenberg plays Lipsky and Jason Segel plays Wallace. Alice was impressed. She says even though the movie has a tons of talking, it's never boring.
