COMMERCE - February 1st was National Signing Day, and around the nation college football fans are getting their first glimpse into the future of their teams.
Texas A&M University-Commerce was no different, announcing the first wave of recruits headed for Commerce to help the Lions rebound from a 2011 season that saw them limp to a 1-9 finish.
Depth at Quarterback and playmaking ability from their Defensive Backs were glaring weaknesses last year, and the Lions came out strong in those two areas with their first signings.
Head Coach Guy Morriss has added significant depth at Quarterback, signing transfers Justin Duncan (6’5, 200 pds, Louisburg College) and Justin Gomez (6’2, 210 pds, Solano College) as well as High School recruits Joshua Brown (6’5, 200 pds, Bryan Adams) and Trevor Lassetter (6’5, 200 pds, Lone Oak). The Lions hope signing 6 defensive backs will add some stability in their pass defense against the pass-happy Lone Star Conference.
The biggest star in this first wave of signings appears to be Wide Receiver Darrian Gilmore of Hallsville. Gilmore comes to Commerce with incredible size at 6’6 and 205 pounds. According to reports, he chose A&M-Commerce over scholarship offers from TCU, Texas Tech and Stephen F. Austin.
More signings will continue to be released by A&M-Commerce in the following days.
