By Bill Oliver

Commerce, TX – A Texas A and M University-Commerce student beat agriculture students from four year schools in Texas and Oklahoma in receiving the outstanding senior in Agronomy award at the American Society of Agronomy annual meeting. Chase Garcia of Sulphur Springs competed against students from A and M-College Station, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Sam Houston. He also gave a presentation on research he did in conjunction with assistant professor Doctor Rocky Lemus. A and M-Commerce is also home to a winner from the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship organization. Doctor Rodger Pool will receive the lifetime achievement award when Phi Theta Kappa holds its national convention next month. Doctor Pool, now the director of the Educational Leadership Center for community college education at A and M-Commerce, was president of Eastfield College in Mesquite. He previously received Phi Theta Kappa's meritorious service award and was named to the group's Presidents Hall of Honor.
