A&M Commerce at <BR>Lone Star Conference<BR> fall sports media day

Ft. Worth, TX –

Lone Star Conference coaches and media met in Ft. Worth Monday to preview fall teams and players.

New Texas A&M University-Commerce Athletic Director Carlton Cooper was on hand and said he was impressed to see where the Lions placed in the pre-season football, volleyball, and soccer polls.

Lions women's soccer was predicted to finish 3rd out of the 11 teams in the LSC. Lions football was tabbed to finish 3rd in the north division, and volleyball was voted to finish 8th out of 13 teams.

Lions football linebacker Garnet Smith finished second in the voting for the LSC's north division football pre-season defensive player of the year. Another area standout, Paris quarterback Billy Malone
of Abilene Christian, was named the south division's
offensive pre-season player of the year.

Monday's gathering marked the first conference fall sports media day since 1991, according to West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel. Carthel also called on the President's of LSC member institutions to vote for funding summer scholarships for student-athletes.
