lionathletics.com
The Javelinas remain winless in Lone Star Conference play this season.

David Calloway has been relieved of his duties as Head Football Coach at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (1-5, 0-4 LSC), TAMUK Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Campus Recreation Scott Gines announced Monday evening.

Gines appointed Texas A&M-Kingsville offensive line coach and former Javelina All-American Jaime Martinez as interim head coach through the completion of the 2014 regular season.

“Although mid-year leadership change is not common, the competitive trajectory of our program must intensify,” Gines said. “Many factors go into whether a head coach succeeds or fails in scoreboard results. Coach Calloway enthusiastically took the reins of this program, installing accountability measures and serving as a passionate teacher-coach. His character, commitment and work ethic are unquestioned.”

A national search will be conducted immediately and led by Parker Executive Search (Atlanta, Ga.).

Gines informed Calloway of his decision Monday afternoon, and then spoke to the rest of the coaching staff and the 2014 Javelina football team.  "Our university is home to conference and national champions; our traditions ignite pride and high expectations for success; and, I am grateful for the Javelina fans, alumni, and donors who faithfully support our coaches and players," Gines stated.

Martinez is in his 10th season as the offensive lines coach and recruiting coordinator. Influential in the growth of Christian Garcia, the sophomore earned All-Lone Star Conference honors following the 2013 campaign. Martinez, a Beeville native, was a standout lineman for the Javelinas from 1992-95, earning two all-conference selections. A two-time All-American, the Javelinas won four LSC Championships in Martinez’s tenure, going 21-0 in conference play and posting a 39-13 overall record. Kingsville advanced to the NCAA Division II semifinals three times and the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1993.

Calloway was in his second year as head coach and eighth season as a member of the Kingsville coaching staff.  He was the defensive coordinator from 2007-12 before taking over as the ninth head coach in school history in December of 2012.

The Javelinas host Angelo State University (3-2, 2-2 LSC) on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at Javelina Stadium in its Kleberg Bank Homecoming Game.
