McKinney – Police say the man who opened fire at the McKinney Police Station yesterday morning may have been trying to draw people out of the building and blow up a trailer loaded with explosives.
29-year-old Patrick Gray Sharp, of Anna, was found dead following a shootout with police.
The campus was immediately put on lockdown after the shots were fired, which occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Students were also notified through the college's emergency alert system. No students, faculty or staff were injured.
According to McKinney Deputy Chief Scott Brewer, a Ford F-150 pulling a trailer approached the south side of a public safety building, and then was quickly engulfed in flames.
"We believe there was ammunition inside that vehicle," said Brewer. "Subsequently, the fire itself set off that ammunition, causing rounds to be dispersed within the immediate area."
Shortly thereafter, the public safety building began to take fire and a "small exchange" of gunfire took place between police and the suspect. No officers were injured. It was unclear if Sharp died as result of police gunfire or by a self inflicted wound.
