Apartment complex about to go dry?

Brad Kellar

For the past 10 days, residents of a Greenville apartment complex have had to live without power, as the apartment management repeatedly failed to pay the electric bill.

The City of Greenville is now preparing to cut off the water to the Texas United Housing complex, 1216 Interstate 30, for the same reason.

GEUS, the local electric utility system, terminated power to the complex September 29, after the management at the apartments did not pay the bill. Notices were posted on the grounds September 17, warning the tenants of the “all bills paid” complex of the continued problem.

It was the second time in two months the power was shut off to the complex. GEUS cut power to the apartments August 25 and restored the electricity later that day after the delinquent amount had been paid.

GEUS Consumer Services Manager Jimmy Dickey said Tuesday the utility is still waiting to hear from the owners or managers of the property.

“We have not had any contact and no payment has been made,” Dickey said.

The high temperature in Greenville rose well into the 90s Tuesday.

Several people were observed moving out of the complex this past weekend. Those that have stayed at the apartments now face a new hurdle, no water.

“They have not paid for their water,” Greenville City Manager Massoud Ebrahim said. “Most likely we are going to cut off the water in the next week.”

Ebrahim said the complex is 40 days behind in paying the water bill.

“And I believe they have a history of being delinquent in their utility billing,” Ebrahim said.

When reached Tuesday afternoon, apartment manager Deborah Kroupa did not comment regarding the issues regarding the utilities, but said a protest meeting is being planned at the complex at 7 p.m. next Wednesday, October 15.

“Hopefully there will be a lot of positive changes which come out of this,” Kroupa said.
